“I won’t let them get you, Ava. No one is going to hurt you,” he promised her.

She cocked her head. “You can’t promise me that, Captain. Just—teach me what you can in the time we have. When do we go on the offensive?”

“Once I have all my men here, we’ll plan that. You want to be in on those meetings?”

“Yes.”

“Then you will be. Now get some rest. We’ll be changing planes in Montana.”

She looked at him and he felt seen to his soul. Then she nodded again and went back to looking out the window.

Cap let his head rest against the back of the seat and decided to try to get some sleep. She was safe for now.

CHAPTER EIGHT

They changed planes in Montana. It was snowing, and for the first time in a long time Ava missed Minneapolis. It always snowed in Minnesota. She lifted her head to the snow and let it soothe her. Then Cap had hurried her into the plane and they’d taken off again.

He’d taken the seat across from her again but this time they were in a Cessna and both Kyle and Scope had stayed behind to drive down to the cabin in Idaho. The plane only held up to four people and it was still a tight squeeze.

The loud engine noise didn’t invite conversation and Ava had to turn her ears down to be able to stand it. Cap handed her a pair of headphones that nearly swallowed her head whole. But she put them on and he could talk to her through them.

“Are you scared?” he asked her.

“It’s too beautiful to be scared,” she replied and then rested her head against the seat. She really didn’t want to talk to Cap and she’d damn sure never admit she was scared of flying to him. He had her so confused she didn’t know if she was coming or going.

He took her cue and didn’t bother her anymore for the hour it took them to reach a small airstrip outside of the Wilderness. They landed, and it was a bumpy ride to be sure, but the plane came to a stop and Ava said a quick prayer of thanks to her Maker.

Then it was another massive SUV. Holland drove, and Cap sat in the front with him. They’d put Ava in the second-row seat. At least she wasn’t in the floorboard this time.

It took them another hour of arduous driving through mountain passes to make it to what Cap called the Cabin. It continued to snow and Ava had surely marked the leather seats with her nails as she held on through the passes. Then there was an opening in the trees and there it was: the Cabin.

It was absolutely gorgeous. For the second time, she thought mercenary work must really pay well. They parked beside another SUV about a hundred meters from the main structure and Cap got out. Holland looked at her in the rearview. “He’ll want to clear it first.”

She nodded in understanding.

Cap came out about ten minutes later with a smile on his face. “Ray and Marshall did indeed beat us here. They’re cooking. Let’s get out and get some grub,” he said to Holland and Ava.

Ava reached for her backpack but Cap slung it over his shoulder before walking to the cabin. She glanced at Holland, who tried to hide a smile, then she followed Cap.

She’d met both Ray and Marshall once, over two years ago when Cap had brought them in after her dad had been murdered. She couldn’t remember if she’d even said two words to the men.

Cap introduced them all again.

“Good to see you again,” Ray told her.

Marshall just nodded. Cap threw him a penetrating look but Marshall remained silent.

Ava took out her earbuds and put them in their case. They were bothering her and she needed a bit of silence while they charged back up.

“Where’s my room?” Ava signed to Cap.

He motioned her to follow him, and she did, up a beautiful wooden staircase that opened onto the second floor of the cabin. The cabin walls were made of glass and wood. The floors were hardwood. The view was simply breathtaking.

She brought her hands up. “How much land do you own?”

“Six-thousand acres,” he signed back.

Her eyes nearly bugged out of her head at that. He turned then and headed down a long hall. At the end of the hall was a door. He opened it, and she followed him in. Another gorgeous room that looked like it probably belonged to Cap. Another huge bed dominated the room. She wondered if the bathroom was as decadent as the one in Chicago.
