Page 30 of Finding Ava

Cap’s men had been honed in fires across the world. He was lucky they’d stuck with him.

“Is the runway clear outside of Boise?” Cap asked Kyle.

“Yes, it’s been snowing but it’s been cleared and ready for us.” She typed furiously on a laptop. “I’ve got our bikers,” she said as she turned the laptop around for them all to see. “Chinese nationals, all of them, here on expired visas. None of them survived.”

“Anything on the information Maddigan had?”

Kyle shook her head. “Tex and I are working an angle. Hopefully it’ll pan out. Your girlfriend”—she sneered the word—“hasn’t given you any leads?”

Cap threw her a look, telling her without telling her to not go there with him. “Nothing. She swears she doesn’t know anything. I believe her.”

“Samson believed Delilah too and look where that got him,” she said peering over Cap’s shoulder at Ava.

“Leave her alone, Kyle. I won’t tell you again,” he said firmly.

“She can handle herself,” Kyle stated.

Cap nodded but said nothing at that. “You all need to try for some shut-eye.”

He left them with that directive and headed back to Ava.

Sitting across from her, he watched her face for any insight into what she was thinking.

“Do I have a booger in my nose or something?” she asked.

“I don’t know, do you?” he asked right back.

“You’re going to stare my face off,” she remarked with a smile and then turned the full force of her green gaze on him.

How long had he wanted to be able to look into her eyes? He rubbed his chest. She made his heart hurt.

“Do you know how to shoot?” he asked.

She shook her head. “No. I was running and there was no time to learn weapons. I did take a few self-defense courses as I could but that’s the extent of my abilities.”

“You almost knocked my nose off my face the other night. I’d say you picked up some pretty neat tricks.”

She shrugged. “I picked up what I could. Is there space to run where we’re going?”

“You don’t want to run around the Wilderness…there’re bears. But I’ve got a full workout area with a treadmill, and it’s got your name on it.”

She smiled at that.

“I’m going to teach you how to shoot, okay? I need to know you can protect yourself if it comes to that,” Cap told her, hoping against hope it never happened.

“I’ve never liked guns, but I see the need. I’d appreciate it.”

“Good.”

“How did you know?” she asked him suddenly.

His brows lowered. “Know what?”

“How they were there. Was there an alarm? If so I may need to start sleeping with my ears in.”

“No, there was no alarm. It was a feeling. I’ve done this for years now—I’ve learned to trust my instincts.”

She nodded as if she understood.
