“There’s hardly any chatter on this one and it’s confusing me, Cap. I don’t know what they’re planning but it’s gotta be something big. Are you prepared?”

“I’m ready for them,” Cap said firmly.

“I just got a text from Wolf—they’re leaving here and heading your way in the morning,” Tex reported.

“Got it. And Tex? I owe you big for this,” Cap told him.

“There are no chits between friends, Cap. It’s my pleasure to help you out, you know this.”

Tex cut out after that, and Cap hung up the SAT phone. He rubbed his forehead and took another deep, cleansing breath. He’d been planning for this for two long years. They may bring a small army as Marsh had said, but by God, Cap would be waiting for them.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Ava’s arms were tired after her training with Marsh. The big man kept his directives short and to the point and didn’t bother with any small talk. That was fine with Ava but she wondered what he had up his butt that he was short with her.

“You’ve got good aim. We just need to get your arms a little stronger,” Marsh told her bluntly.

“I don’t think I can do that in a few days,” she said, biting her lip.

“I wonder if you’d be better with a rifle?” he asked no one in particular.

Ava cocked her head at him. “I have no idea. I’ve never shot one. I have shot a 12-gauge before.”

“Shotguns are for close quarters. Let’s try this Barrett .50 cal sniper rifle. If we set you up on a ridge somewhere, your eyes are good enough you can pick them off before they make it to us,” Marsh mused.

He was talking but it wasn’t really to her. She watched him put the rifle back together and was amazed at the workings of the weapon.

“Now the kick on this thing isn’t bad—it’s a semi-automatic—and you should be scared when you shoot, but not so afraid you don’t make the shot. Here,” he said and handed her the gun. “Set up on this target,” he pointed out the farthest target.

She put her eye to the scope and found the target.

“Easy on the trigger,” he cautioned.

She pulled the trigger and the gun rebounded, but not so badly she couldn’t control it. “Did I hit it?” she asked him.

Marshall hit the button that brought the target to them. “Goddamn, but yes you did!” He turned to her. “Do it again.”

The target went back down the line and Ava put her eye to the scope again. She eased on the trigger and sent her shot winging away.

Marshall shook his head when he got the target back up the line. “You’re a natural.” He looked down at her. “We’ll head out to a pass this afternoon and see if you can hit a tree from any distance.”

She nodded.

“Right now we need to keep practicing with the Glock. They won’t be expecting you to contribute and if you know how to shoot both weapons it makes your ability to protect yourself that much better.”

So that’s what they did. Marshall set up targets and Ava shot at them, getting better by the minute.

“Let’s head in for some chow,” Marshall finally said.

Ava couldn’t stand it any longer. “What’s your problem with me?”

Surprise etched his handsome features. Then he sighed. “Cap’s gonna kick my ass.”

“This is between me and you,” she told the big man.

“I saw how you leaving affected Cap. He’s my team leader and one of my best friends. Hell, he’s family. And you just ripped him apart when you left.”

She nodded, understanding that Cap’s team was close. “What about what he’d done to me?” she asked him.
