Page 47 of Finding Ava

She found everyone in the war room. Keegan was on the big screen.

“You’ve got about fifty men heading your way from Boise. They flew in on a private charter last night. Russians. Apparently, the Chinese have backed off, leaving it to the Russians to get things handled,” Keegan reported.

Cap glanced at her as she walked into the room. “We can handle that,” he told Keegan.

Keegan nodded. “They met with a local arms dealer, and I’m pretty sure they’re bringing RPGs to the party. You’ll need to catch them before they head up that final pass to the cabin.”

“ETA?” Cap asked.

“Four hours,” Keegan reported.

“What about the mole?” Cap questioned.

“I’m on his tail. I’ll keep you posted.”

“Thanks, Tex. We’ll be in touch. You’ll be patched into the feed.”

Keegan nodded again and then said, “Watch your sixes. Something about this seems too easy.”

Kyle cleared her throat. “You keep at it on your side, and I’ll keep plugging away here. If there’re more coming, we’ll figure it out.”

“All right—everybody get ready and meet back here in thirty,” Cap ordered.

Ava made her way up the stairs and to her room with Cap at her heels. He walked in behind her and grabbed her around the waist, pulling her into this body. His warmth called to her.

“This is it. I’m sending you up that last pass before the mountaintop with Marshall.”

She turned around in his arms. “I’d rather be with you.”

He shook his head. “You’ll have the Glocks and the Barrett. You’ll set up and pick them off if they make it up that far. I need you to listen to me,” he said and his voice was dark.

She nodded.

“I trust Marshall with my life. I don’t trust anyone with yours. We don’t know who is feeding the Chinese and the Russians information. I trust my team, but money can be a huge motivator. I’ve had Tex do a deep dive into everyone and Marshall comes up clean so I’m sending him with you. But if anything happens and you find out different—shoot to kill.”

“I’m not shooting Marshall. Granted the man didn’t like me at first but I don’t think he’s our mole,” Ava scoffed.

He shook her gently. “Listen to me—shoot to kill. Trust your instincts. Do you have your earbuds? Are they charged?”

“Yes and yes,” Ava reported.

“Your ears operate on wifi…it’s going to be spotty in the wilderness. The vehicle you’re going in has a built-in wifi so join with that and tell Marsh to leave the SUV running. I’m going to give you an earpiece that you’ll need to wear over your ear. Now get dressed,” he ordered.

“What about you? Will I be able to hear you?” she asked, suddenly nervous.

“That’s what the earpiece I’m going to give you is for,” he said with a small smile. “The earpiece is bi-directional so you’ll be able to both hear me and talk to me. Once you’re dressed, I’ll show you how it works.”

Ava dressed then pulling on a pair of long john underwear with a top. She pulled her jeans over that and then put on a pair of boots that Melody had sent. Her sheepskin coat came next. She found her earmuffs and her gloves and looked over at Cap.

He was pulling on a pair of camo cargoes and a camo shirt. She knew before it was all said and done he’d probably smear camouflage face paint all over his face. He too pulled on all-terrain boots and then walked over to her.

He cupped her face, as he often did when he had something important to say. “Nothing matters but your safety. I am going to do everything in my power to keep you safe but you need to prepare okay? What did I say?”

“Shoot to kill,” she echoed his earlier command.

“Yes. If worse comes to worse, Marshall will get you to the caves. You stay there until Tex comes do you hear me? If you’re going to the caves that means I’m down. Do. Not. Panic. Just get to the caves and hide.”

“You better stay safe, Captain.”
