He kissed her hard and released her face, stepping back and strapping on his weapons harness. “Marshall has your harness and earpiece—go on down and I’ll meet you down there.”

She did as he ordered and when she made it downstairs Marshall stepped up to her and said, “Let’s get this on you.”

She took off her coat and strapped on her weapons harness. He had to pull a couple of straps to tighten it up but once he finished she was comfortable. He then handed her two Glock 9mm pistols that she seated in the harness—one on each side. Marshall held out her coat and then zipped her up into it.

“We’re going to go ahead of everyone else up to that final pass, okay?” Marshall asked.

“Sounds good. Where’s the Barrett?”

“I’ve already loaded it into the SUV,” Marshall answered.

“Then let’s go,” she told him.

“Ava?” Cap called from the top of the stairs. He stared at her intently. “Be safe.”

“You be safe,” she said in return. Every one of Wolf’s men and Cap’s men laughed. Kyle said nothing.

Marshall motioned her to follow him and they got in the armored SUV. Marshall turned to her and held out a tiny earpiece that fit over the opening of her ear. “Put this on and let’s test it.”

She fitted the piece over her ear and looked at Marshall.

“Click it once and hold down to talk. Go ahead,” he told her.

She did as he’d told her and said, “Testing, testing.”

She got a chorus of 10-4s in return and Marshall gave her a thumbs up. “You’re in,” he said. “Now this channel isn’t for small talk. You listen and if someone asks you a question, you respond.”

She nodded her understanding.

Marshall grabbed her hand and squeezed. “You okay?”

“I’m scared,” she admitted.

“Good, it’ll keep you sharp. Let’s go!”

Then they were off, up the first pass and then onto the top pass of the mountain. It took about an hour and a half to reach the upper pass because of the snow. Once there, they hustled out of the SUV and set up.

“You’ve got to wear the ghillie,” Marshall told her.

So he helped her put it on and then carried the sniper rifle over to the location they had reconned the day before. As soon as she was settled, Marshall returned to the SUV and got his own rifle out. He put on his ghillie suit and settled in beside Ava.

“Pay attention to the earpiece. That will let us know if or when anything is heading our way.”

They lay there, looking through their scopes for over an hour. Ava was beginning to think nothing was going to happen, and then, a flare lit up the sky. Someone had tripped a wire.

She glanced at Marshall and listened to the earpiece.

“We have intrusion in sector six. Intrusion in sector six,” Scope said across the piece.

“Get on them. Two SUVs coming up the main pass to the cabin,” Cap reported. “Wolf, get ready.”

“On them,” Wolf reported.

Another flare from somewhere up the mountain then.

“We have tangoes on the mountain, say again, tangoes on the mountain.”

Another flare and still another and they were all coming from behind Ava and Marshall.
