“Goddamn it,” Cap bit out. “Dude, do you have visual?”

“No, it’s snowing too hard up here,” Dude reported.

“Marshall, get her out of there!” Cap ordered.

Just then, a huge fireball lit up the dying day. The pass below them shuddered in response. “One SUV down,” Wolf reported and again his voice was dead calm.

Another fireball and the pass shuddered again. “Two down,” Abe stated.

“Benny—anything your way?” Cap asked.

“All clear,” Benny reported.

“Men coming up the upper pass,” Marshall said, and pointed.

Ava moved her rifle and eyeballed the scope.

“Easy on the trigger,” Marshall whispered.

Marshall took out the lead man. Ava took the next one. The other ten or so scrambled for cover, returning fire but not knowing where to fire at.

“Two down,” Marshall reported. “Ten more coming up the pass through the forest.”

“Get her out, Marsh,” Cap ordered again.

“We have tangoes behind us,” Marshall reported. “We are locked in position, I repeat, locked in position.”

“Scope, I need you on them, I’m on my way,” Cap yelled into the earpiece.

Ava’s heart raced and fear was an acrid taste in her mouth. “Are we surrounded?” she asked Marshall almost silently.

He nodded yes. “I’m going to turn around and pick them off from above. You pick them off coming up the pass. Keep your eye on the tree line. They have to come out sooner or later…make ‘em pay for it.”

She nodded her assent and took up position.

Just then she heard a sound that nearly stopped the blood flowing in her body. A helicopter was coming up the mountain. Gunshots rang out from the helicopter, peppering about one hundred yards in front of Ava.

“They’ve got a helicopter,” she said holding down the button on the earpiece.

“Not anymore,” Dude said and just as soon as he said it, a single shot rang out. The helicopter made a funny sound and fell to the earth. Dude had taken it out. It exploded in a ball of fire.

“Shoot to kill, Ava,” Cap said in her ear.

She didn’t think, she just reacted, taking aim and taking out at least five men in succession. “Five down,” she said.

Behind her Marshall was firing shot after shot. “Six down.”

Ava watched her scope and finally saw two men, who appeared as wraiths in the falling light, start toward her location. She capped them both before they could take a single step. She reloaded her rifle then. “Two more down.”

Flares were going off all over the mountain. Fifty men her ass.

Where was Tex?

“Sit rep?” Cap called out.

“On my way up the mountain,” Wolf reported.

“I’m on his six,” Abe said.
