Page 52 of Finding Ava

“You know what’s coming, right?” Wolf asked him bluntly.

“Interrogation. They think she’s got information,” Cap said.

“Any idea what it could be?” Scope asked.

Cap shook his head. “She doesn’t have any idea what it could be or where it could be.”

Tex’s voice came over the car speakers. “They’re hunting for a flash drive.”

“What’s it got on it?” Cap asked.

“Specs for one of the Pentagon’s new nuclear submarines.”

“Fuck me,” Wolf said aloud.

What the fuck had Maddigan been thinking?

“Why do they think she has it?” Cap wanted to know.

“Per the chatter that’s what they’ve always thought—it’s why they’ve invested so much in finding her,” Tex responded.

“We’re about ten minutes out,” Scope reported.

“Everybody on board?” Cap asked.

Each to a man nodded. They were going to surround the little house, then storm it.

Cap settled in then for the rest of the ride to Morris Hill. Ava, Ava, Ava…

Her name was a mantra in his head and in his heart. He’d thought her safe at the cabin but he’d been proven wrong. He wouldn’t make that mistake again. Someone was going to pay dearly for that. Kyle, Jennings, the Chinese, the Russians…Cap was going to make them all pay.

Pain exploded in her cheek as the lead Russian took another swing at her. She felt the blood fill her mouth and wondered if she’d lost any teeth.

“Hit me, you fucking bastard,” Marshall called out from the other side of the room.

The Russian just laughed and punched Ava in the stomach. She folded over and groaned until she got her breath back. She was scared she wasn’t going to make it out of this basement alive. She was so scared that if she knew anything she’d readily give it over to them.

“All you have to do is tell me where it is,” the Russian bit out.

Blood dribbled from her mouth, and she looked up at the big man currently punching the life out of her. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she whispered.

The Russian got in her face then, smoothing a hand down her injured left cheek. “Come on, shlyukha, you know what we’re looking for,” the Russian said before he began to squeeze her jaws.

The pain was intense but he seemed to enjoy it when she screamed out, so she kept her groan to herself. They had removed her ghillie suit and her coat and they’d laughed when they found her harness and her guns, ripping them from her before pointing the guns at her. Then they had pulled her hands behind her back and zip-tied them to the chair.

Ava was probably bleeding from the ties, but it was another source of pain she had to ignore. They were being held in a basement of some sort that had two small windows, one on each side.

“You think you can keep it from me?” the Russian asked.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Ava said again.

“Maybe if I punish the big American you’ll talk?” The Russian then walked over to Marshall and before Ava could draw in a breath to scream ‘no’, he shot Marshall in the left leg.

Marshall grunted but said nothing.

She couldn’t watch him be tortured any more than she could handle being tortured herself. She really wanted Cap.

“Is that not enough? Maybe I’ll shoot him in his other leg,” the Russian sing-songed. “Or maybe,” he said turning to Ava, “Maybe I’ll shoot you this time.”
