She was hurting so badly she didn’t know what to say so she said nothing. Everything was a bit blurry.

“Minneapolis,” she muttered. Or maybe she screamed it. “Take me to Minneapolis.”

Cap picked her up then and she settled into his arms, confident the men who’d hurt her were dead. He pushed her face into his neck and then they were moving fast. She had to tell him. She knew where her father had hidden the flash drive. She’d figured it out.

But Cap wasn’t listening to her, he was too busy wrapping her wrists and wiping the blood off her face.

“I’ve got you,” he signed and just continued wiping her face.

His face was terrible—anger written all over his beautiful features. “Where’s Marshall?” she asked aloud.

Cap pushed her hair back off her forehead and continued to wipe at the blood that welled there. “He’s safe. Wolf and Abe got him out.”

“We’ve got to go to Minneapolis,” she said, again, hoping her voice was loud enough to be heard.

Cap winced and she realized she was probably screaming. She pulled away from him and signed instead. “I know where the drive is.”

“Not here,” he mouthed. Then he pulled her earbuds out of her ears, and she was the one wincing. He pulled her charger from his pocket and put them in to charge. She hit him on the arm—he needed to listen to her.

He grabbed her up again and then carefully put her in the backseat of yet another SUV. She wished then she wasn’t deaf. It was wasted effort, but she’d give anything to be able to hear what was being said around her.

He crawled in beside her and just held her.

Within minutes they were pulling up to the airport and heading to a private plane. It looked like the same one they’d gone to Montana in. He carried her out of the SUV and up the stairs into the interior of the plane.

Instead of putting her in a seat, he kept moving to the back of the plane. He opened a door, and she was in a room with a bed. He lay her gently down and looked at her. “Stay,” he mouthed.

She had the insane urge to bark like a dog but he’d obviously been affected by her being taken and hurt. She’d cut him a break.

Scope came into the room then, dressed in fatigues and face paint. He carried a first aid kit in his hand. “I’m going to sew you up,” he signed to her once he put the kit down.

“Where?” she asked with her hands.

He pointed to her forehead and she nodded. “Lie down and I’ll give you a shot for the pain.”

She shook her head at that. “Head trauma,” she signed. “My head hit the concrete, and I’m pretty sure I have a concussion.”

“Then I’ll just numb the area so it doesn’t hurt as bad when I stitch you up,” Scope signed right back.

Ava nodded.

She laid down and waited for the prick of the needle to numb the area on her forehead. It didn’t take long.

It took him a few minutes to sew up the area and then he put gauze and tape on it. He handed her two packs for her swollen eyes and then went to work on cleaning and bandaging her wrists.

Cap stood by the entire time watching.

“Josephine,” she said and hoped it was soft.

Cap gently turned her face with his finger so she could look at him. He pulled the ice off and she opened her eyes. He was still blurry but there was nothing to be done about it. She squinted and that brought him into a little bit of focus.

“We have a team going for Jo now,” he signed to her.

She released a rough breath and started to cry. The tears stung her abused eyes. Cap picked her up and sat her in his lap. Her body was shaking and her ears were still ringing. Thank God they’d sent someone for Josephine. Thank God.

Cap ran his hands over her body and she had no doubt he was as shaken as she was.

“I’m okay,” she said aloud.
