She didn’t have time to think about anything—she knew what the Chinese wanted and she was fully prepared to take them to get it if it saved the people she loved.

“Come now, dearest,” the Chinese man said. “Let’s go.” To Keegan he said, “If you come after me I will shoot and kill her, do not doubt me.”

If he wasn’t shy about shooting her why had he gone through all the trouble of locating her? And how in the hell had they gotten into Tex’s so easily? God, her head hurt badly. He pulled her behind him, though gently, and they walked out of Keegan’s house to a waiting SUV.

She really hated SUVs.

Once she was seated, he got in beside her and they left Keegan’s property.

“My name is Lin,” the Chinese man said.

She looked askance at him—who gave a shit what his name was?

“I think we’re going to be big friends,” he said to her. “Tell me, did the Russian do that to your face?”

She nodded.

“They are bullies and have no reverence for a woman. They’re despicable.”

She agreed but kept her mouth shut.

“You know why I came for you, don’t you, dearest?” Lin asked.

“I know what you want,” she told him softly.

“And you’re prepared to help me get it?” he asked.

She nodded and said nothing.

“Good, that’s good. Then I won’t have to hurt you like the Russian did.”

He talked to her like they were the best of friends and he had no intention of killing her once he got what he wanted. She knew better. The moment she handed over the flash drive she was dead. And she was prepared to pay that fee if it meant her sister and her man were left safe.

Cap may want to light the world on fire if she died but he’d at least be alive and safe from the factions that had hunted her for the last two years.

She didn’t know how she felt about the fact that Kyle was dead. The woman had never liked her and had put herself in harm’s way when she betrayed Cap and the others. Ava didn’t have time to feel bad for her. She was doing her damndest to stay alive herself.

“Would you like some tea?” Lin asked once they were settled on a plane heading to Minneapolis.

She shook her head.

“Drink it anyway,” he said in a cold, dead voice.

It was meant to knock her out, she knew. But his voice brooked no argument so she drank the damn tea and within moments her eyes became heavy and her mind clouded.

“Sleep precious, we’ll be there soon enough,” Lin sing-songed.

She had one more second before sleep claimed her and her only thought was of Cap.

Someone was squeezing her jaw and it hurt. She rushed headlong into wakefulness and pain. It took her fuddled brain a second to remember what had happened. Oh yeah, she drank the damn tea.

“Wake up, Ava Maddigan,” the Chinese man…Lin…said in a soft voice.

She opened eyes that were still swollen from her beating at the hands of the Russians. Lin was standing over her with his hands on her jaw, squeezing.

She moved her head to the side quickly and pulled her jaw out of his hands. He laughed. Ava hated that laugh.

“Wake up, Ava Maddigan—we’re here!”
