“Ava! You’re awake. Sit down before you fall down,” Keegan ordered.

Bossy SEALs, she thought. “What’s going on?”

“He’ll kill me if you listen to this,” Keegan told her.

She shrugged. “I’ll kill you if you don’t let me listen to whatever this is.”

Keegan smiled. “Still got the spunk I see.”

“Never lost it,” Marshall said from across the room. Then he hobbled over to where Ava sat at the big conference table and sat down beside her.

She smiled at him. “How’s the leg?”

“Hurts like a motherfucker, but it looks better than your face, so there’s that.”

“Ha, ha, ha,” Ava said waspishly.

“You got us, Tex?” Cap’s voice came from the speakers located in the room.

“10-4,” Tex responded.

Ava looked at Tex. “Where are they?” But she was afraid she already knew. “He went after Jennings, didn’t he?”

Tex nodded and motioned for her to be quiet.

“Holland has made entrance. Repeat, we are inside.” Cap said.

About a minute went by before, “First floor cleared.” Holland said and his voice was ghostly across the earpieces they wore. “It’s too fucking quiet.”

“Making entry to second level,” Cap stated.

She needed him to be safe. Her hands clenched on the table in front of her.

“Two tangoes in the bed,” Holland reported.

“Wake up, Jennings,” Cap said loudly.

“Son of a bitch—they’re both dead!” Holland exclaimed.

“The Chinese beat us here,” Cap said. “Tex, you’re clear? Check your perimeter.”

“We have incursion, I repeat we have incursion,” Scope reported as he banged away at a laptop.

“Tex!” Melody yelled from the foyer.

Ava’s heart beat hard at the fear she heard in the other woman’s voice. She got up and Marshall reached for her, but it was too late, she followed Keegan out to the foyer.

Melody stood there, fear written all across her face as a Chinese man held a semi-automatic pistol at her head.

“Ahhh, there she is,” the Chinese man stated in perfect English.

Ava had known. In her gut, she’d known as soon as she heard Melody’s voice what was about to go down. “Let her go,” Ava demanded in a hard voice.

“Let’s switch, shall we? You come with me, and Mr. and Mrs. Keegan are none the worse for our little adventure. And these fine SEALs will be left alive.”

“Ava, no!” she heard Cap yell from the war room.

She looked at Keegan and nodded. “Tell him I always loved him and I always will.” Then she walked into the arms of the Chinese man as soon as he let Melody go.
