“I’ll still be here if you need me,” I said.

“But it won’t be the same.”

“You’re right. It won’t, but this can be a good thing for both of us.”

“I guess now you’ll tell me I have to forgive him too?”

“No. Griff and I agreed we won’t press the matter anymore. The ball’s in your court.”

Silence settled over the table. I sipped my coffee, allowing him time to mull over my words. My phone vibrated, and I took it out of my pocket. I glanced up at Jay. Griff was on the line.

“Let me take this real quick.” I swiped the Answer button. “Hey, what’s up?”

“Just checking on you. Have you left work already?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“It’s my night to cook, but how about I take you out instead? We’ve hardly done anything outside of the apartment.”

“That sounds nice.”

“You sound strange. Is something wrong?”

“I’m with Jay.”

I glanced at the man sitting across from me, frowning into his cup of coffee, pretending he wasn’t hearing my end of the conversation.

“You are?”

“Yeah. I’ll tell you about it when I see you in a little while. I’m gonna go now. Okay?”

“All right. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Jay was full-blown scowling now. “Love?” He raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah.” I smiled. “We’re in love.”

“Jesus.”

I chuckled. “Don’t make it sound like that.”

“It’s either that or gag. My dad, Scott. He’s my dad.”

“In my defense, he’s totally hot, okay?”

He did make a gagging sound that time, and I laughed.

“Has he really changed, Scott?” he asked softly, and from the earnest look in his eyes, I could tell he wanted to believe.

“I don’t know what he was like before, but I can tell you he’s a sweet, loving, and patient man. And he’s dedicated and committed to us.”

“So why wasn’t he the same with me?”

“I can’t answer that, but I know he would love to be that for you now.”

“I just…” He shook his head. “By the way, I said some pretty awful things to you when we were fighting. About David. That was wrong of me. Even if you were emotionally involved with my father at that time, it gave him no excuse to hit you. I hope you know I didn’t mean that.”
