“Thank you,” he said. “I’ve had the corset for a while but was never brave enough to wear it for you. To be honest, I almost changed at the thought of wearing it in public, but I didn’t want you to wait longer than necessary.”

“First of all, baby.” I bent in and pecked his lips. “I would have gladly waited for you. And you don’t have to worry about wearing it in public. I’ll be the only one feasting on you tonight.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’ll see. Come.”

I led Scottie from the apartment to a discreet door at the end of the hallway.

“Griff, what’s this?” Scottie held on to my arm.

I couldn’t resist. Leaning sideways, I whispered in his ear, “I’m taking you to my secret lair to suck on your blood.”

He jumped and smacked my shoulder. “Griff, that’s scary.”

“Don’t worry.” I kissed his cheek. “I would take just a sip of your blood. Not all of it.”

I clutched the handle of the door and pushed its resisting frame open. Arms linked, we climbed the dimly lit flight of stairs.

“Griff,” Scottie said timidly.

“Yes?”

“You were kidding about drinking my blood, weren’t you?”

I chuckled. “Would you change your mind and return to the apartment?”

A few seconds passed. Then he sighed. “I’d likely go off with you anyway.”

As we reached the top of the staircase, a soft breeze swept over us, carrying the scent of flowers from the rooftop garden. Soft, warm light from numerous candles illuminated the potted plants and vases of flowers framing the edges of the terrace. In the distance, the city skyline sparkled with its myriad of lights, a dazzling backdrop to our evening.

“Griff.” Scottie tightened his grip on my hand. “Oh, Griff, did you do this for us? It’s beautiful.”

“Better than a restaurant? When I saw how well you’d dressed tonight, I almost had second thoughts about where I was taking you. The world deserves to know I landed a man this sexy.”

“You’re so silly.”

He walked toward the center of the rooftop, where our table awaited, but I held him back. “I mean it, Scottie. Every day I see you still by my side, I think of how lucky I am. I hope you know that. I was never good at these feelings and shit, but you make me want to say the words, even if they don’t come out right. So from now on, you must believe me when I compliment you. Okay?”

“Okay.”

I held out a chair for Scottie, and he took his seat with a smile. His eyes reflected the awe and appreciation of the beautiful scene around us. Next to the table was a food cart laden with the meal I’d ordered. Since I’d turned down the offer of someone to serve us, I did the honors myself, starting with the champagne. The bubbles danced in the crystal flutes as I handed one to Scottie.

“Are we making a toast?” he asked.

I hadn’t planned for one, but why not? “Sure. What do you want to toast to?”

“You go first.”

“All right. A toast to the lovely little liar who contacted me on this day seven years ago and changed my life for the better.”

Scottie gasped. “You remember the date of my first letter?”

“Of course I do. Didn’t you?”

He gave a tiny shake of his head. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think much of it. I can’t believe you remembered.”

“How can I not? You have no idea how much your letters meant to me, do you?”
