“But I told you so many lies.”

“Even so, you kept me entertained, and the important part is that I looked forward to each letter you sent me. You became famous in prison, you know.”

Scottie widened his eyes. “What?”

“It’s not my fault, I swear. You do know they open the letters before handing them to us, right?”

“They do?” he squeaked.

“Yup. Scottie’s letters became a big hit in prison. Each letter was like the next episode of their favorite show.”

“Oh my god, no.”

“Oh my god, yes,” I teased him.

“Why didn’t you say anything, Griff?”

“It was harmless, and I was afraid you’d stop writing to me if I mentioned it. You have no idea how much those letters meant to me, even if those perverts read it first. Someone stole the fake picture of you, by the way.”

“That’s it. Just let me die now.” Scottie hopped up from the table and walked over to the edge of the building. I rushed after him and ran my arms around him from behind.

“But what would I do without you?”

He leaned into me. “Boys are a dime a dozen, Griff, or haven’t you noticed?”

“But they’re not my Scottie McHottie.” I nuzzled his neck. “They don’t blush and get all shy about the simplest mention of sex. They’re not insatiable in bed the way you are.”

“Some of them are.”

“Shh. Don’t ruin it.”

I could tell he was smiling from the way he ducked his head. “And most importantly, their hearts are not as big as yours. There’s no one else for me but you, Scott.”

He sighed and turned around. “And you say you don’t have the words.”

“I don’t, but my heart seems to know what it wants to say.” I brushed his lips with mine. “What do you say? Let’s have dinner?”

He nodded, and I led him back to the table, where I served our meal in a flurry of plates and serving spoons. As we enjoyed the food, the conversation flowed naturally. We laughed about how my fellow inmates teased me for the letters, and Scottie was horrified to find out I got into a fight when someone thought because of the sentimental letters, they could mess with me. I’d been afraid my appeal would have been affected by me putting the guy in the prison infirmary, but there’d been enough evidence I’d been defending myself.

“I didn’t want to put him in the hospital,” I said. “But it had to be done. If you show weakness while you’re locked up, you become a target. I knew if I went soft on him, others would come to test me. After that incident, others avoided me.”

“I’ve never really thought about what it was like in prison. Will you tell me more?”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

At first, I wasn’t certain if he was just being polite, but he listened with interest and asked questions. The time flew by quicker than I’d anticipated, and before we knew it, the food on our plates had gone cold.

“Griff,” Scottie said. “Thank you for tonight. You were right. This is far more incredible than going out and sharing the moment with others.”

I beckoned him over, and Scott sat on my lap. I rubbed a hand across the material of his vest, over his slender chest. “Can I tell you again how amazing you look tonight?”

Wrapping his arms around my neck, he smiled. “I should invest in more corsets, then.”

“You wouldn’t hear a complaint from me.”

“Good.” He leaned in and settled his lips on mine.
