“Damn right you rearranged something just now. My dick thanks you for the blessing your mouth hath bestowed upon it.”

I burst out into a giggle. “Why does that sound religious?”

“There were always those religious nuts at the prison trying to convert us.”

“Pity.”

“Pity what?”

“They didn’t know you’re too bad to be converted.”

“That’s the way you like your men.”

“You can’t—”

“Scott?”

Huh? Was I hallucinating?

I turned around slowly. My ex-boyfriend David stood behind us with a younger guy. His gaze flicked from me to Griff and then back to me. I shrank into Griff, my heart leaping.

“Griff, let’s go.” I tugged at his arm.

Griff must have heard the urgency in my voice because he placed a hand on my back. We took a step.

“Come on, Scott. You can’t be so eager to go after the performance you just gave under the gazebo.”

Griff’s hand curled into a fist at my back. “What’d you say, jerkface?”

David shrugged. “Just not surprised he still acts like a whore. I get why you’re into him. I mean, who wouldn’t? He puts out more than a dysfunctional ATM spits out cash. He never says no.”

“I’ve said no plenty of times. You just never listened.” My whole body was trembling. Why did I have to meet him here after all this time?

“You better watch your mouth, asshole,” Griff snapped, taking a menacing step toward David.

“Come on. Don’t tell me it’s not the truth. If you’re fucking him, you know exactly what he’s like. The only thing he wants is sex, and when he doesn’t get enough, he resorts to fantasizing about screwing some dirty, filthy prisoner who—”

Griff grabbed David by his shirt.

“Please don’t!” David’s boy toy cried. He looked so young his curfew must be approaching soon.

“Griff, please!” I grabbed Griff’s arm. “You can’t get into any more trouble. Just let him go, and we’ll leave. Please, Griff.”

“Listen to him,” David mocked. “I may not know who you are now, but I’m not afraid to sue you. You should take him home. And if he wants it more than you can give him, don’t worry. Just toss him to a friend or two, and he’ll be happy again.”

My throat constricted. How dared he? How dared he insinuate I wanted what he’d done to me? How he’d gaslit and coerced me until I gave in? Then shamed me and slapped me around for it. He was sick, and talking to him wouldn’t change anything.

“I’m leaving.” I turned on my heels and ran.

“Scottie!”

David’s cruel laugh followed me. I kept running until arms wrapped around me from behind. I slapped at Griff’s hands. Why couldn’t he leave me alone? I felt so dirty.

“Let me go.”

“No, I—”

“Pleasepleaseplease. Let me go. Just let me go.”
