“Later.” I broke off the kiss. “We still have the other rooms to explore.”

Going from room to room took very little time. There were two bedrooms, a bathroom and a half bath, a washroom, a living room, and a dining room. Scottie didn’t seem to mind the scant furniture nor the areas that needed improving—new wallpaper, replacing a window—the lack of a washing machine, or the empty bedrooms.

He gushed about what we could do to turn the place into a warm house for me. He didn’t think it was too small but cozy. And it made me want to give him better.

“Thanks for coming with me,” I said when we walked back into the hall at the end of the tour. “I should’ve called instead of popping up unannounced. I won’t drop by your work casually anymore.”

“Now I’m ambivalent.” He squeezed my hand. “I liked the flowers and you taking me to lunch. Seeing you outside, waiting when I walked out of the building today, made me really happy. I’m just worried about what my coworkers will think.”

“I get it. Not much I can do about the tattoos.”

“What?” He jerked his head back. “You think this is about your tattoos?”

“Isn’t it?”

“No, I meant the whole thing coming off as unprofessional. I’d feel the same way if Henry Cavill dropped by unannounced to take me out to lunch.”

I raised my eyebrows. “Henry Cavill, huh? Is that the standard I’m up against?”

“Well, it is Henry Cavill. Even straight guys will make an exception for him.”

He said it so matter-of-factly that I laughed. “You better not be picturing him when we’re in bed.”

“Oh god, don’t give me ideas.”

“Scottie!”

He laughed and danced away from me. “I’m joking.”

“Are you?”

He closed the distance between us, grabbed my leather jacket, and pulled me down. “I’m joking. Henry Cavill has nothing on you.”

“Wait.” I plunged my fingers into his hair and held his head back.

“What? I was joking about Henry.”

“That I get, but what about the other guy?”

“What other guy?”

“The one at your work who gave me the stink eye. What’s going on there? He looked at me like I’d stolen something that belonged to him.”

“You didn’t. He—I guess wanted to go out with me and was a little put out that I’m already taken.”

“Damn straight you are. Now I almost wish I’d sucked your tongue right there in front of him.”

“Are you…jealous? Over me?”

Why did he make it sound so impossible? “I guess I am. You wouldn’t stand still and let me pee a circle around you, would you?”

“Griff, that’s gross.” But he was smiling.

“That’s not an answer.”

“And you won’t get one. Now take me back to my car so I can follow you to your apartment and get naked while trying not to think about Henry.”

Giggling, Scottie bolted for the door, and I chased after him.
