He turns on his side so he’s facing me, hand tucked under his face. I mirror him. “I’m so glad you’re here.”

“On the planet or just in bed with you right now?” I joke.

“Both.” He smiles. I laugh. He moves his hand from under his face to pick up a curl that fell out of my messy bun and tuck it behind my ear. “You’re so beautiful.”

I hold his gaze, “Thank you.”

“Seriously, like you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life,” he says.

I snort a laugh. “I know I’m hot, gringo, but you’re full of it.”

He doesn’t laugh back, but looks at me seriously, his eyes full of unwavering emotion. “I’m not. I’m not lying, joking, or trying to get lucky. You are without a single doubt, the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. And the only thing that is more beautiful, are the pieces of your heart that you’ve given me glimpses of.”

I stare at him, unable to find the words. We stay that way for several moments before I finally say, “You’re beautiful too.”

“Yeah?” he asks, grinning.

“Yeah,” I tell him, not joking. “Your eyes are unreal. I’ve never seen someone with more incredible eyes. Not just the color, although that’s beautiful too, but the depth in them. The sincerity. Your smile is so real, and genuine. And I actually love that little chip in your tooth.”

He laughs, “My mom is bugging me to get it fixed. She’s threatening to make me an appointment if I don’t do it myself.”

I laugh. “How did it happen?” I ask, but thinking that I know the answer already.

“Skateboard accident. I was on the pipe and another guy crashed into me. Happened just before school started.”

“A pipe?” I ask, confused.

“A halfpipe, that u-shaped ramp skaters use,” he says.

“Oh yeah, I’ve seen those before. You seem to be very accident prone on that skateboard, gringo,” I tease.

“I’m actually accident prone to begin with, the skateboard just makes things worse.” He laughs. “I’m pretty good, I’ll have to bring you to the skatepark someday so I can show off all my skills.”

I laugh. “Can I cheer for you on the sidelines?”

“Hell yeah,” he says.

“Sounds fun,” I tell him.

He stares at me for a few moments. I stare back.

“Your soul is beautiful, too.” I lean in and press my lips to his. His hands find my face and he cradles me tenderly. I’m almost making myself sick with all of the mushiness going on in this moment, but I find that I like the warm, fuzzy feelings even more.

He kisses me back and then pulls away slightly to say, “I’m so glad I crashed my skateboard into you.”

I lean away to laugh. “I am too.”

“Yeah?” he asks.

“Hell yeah,” I say, repeating him, which makes him smile wider. A new song starts playing.

“Oh, I heard this song the other day and I thought of you,” he says, pulling his hands away. He moves his arm to go under my head, pulling me slightly to him. I scoot over, moving to lay on my back and pressing my side up against him. I hold the hand that he has under my head, playing with his fingers.

The song plays and as I listen to the words, I stop playing with this hand. I just listen.

“What song is this?” I whisper.

“It’s called, “This Side of Paradise” by Coyote Theory,” he answers.
