“Maybe we could try changing it ourselves?”

At Georgia’s incredulous look, I start laughing. “Okay. Maybe not. But I mean, we’re both intelligent women. We should be able to do it.”

“In theory,” she agrees. “But in reality, I’d rather let Leo take care of it.”

A voice comes up behind us, oddly familiar. “Hey. Looks like you have a flat tire. Need help with that?”

Not any of the Blade and Arrow guys, not Dante, but I’ve heard that voice somewhere.

“That’s okay,” Georgia starts, turning around. “I’m just calling my fiancé.”

Then she gasps. Quick. Shocked. Scared.

I don’t know who this is. But how could I?

All in black, baggy jeans and a huge hoodie pulled up, tied tightly. Huge black sunglasses, covering their face. Taller than me, but the same height as Georgia. And black gloves.

My brain stops on that last part, freezing.

Why is this person wearing gloves in the summer?

Georgia grabs my arm, her hand cold and trembling. “Run.”

But there’s no time.

“No one is running,” the voice says, slick and satisfied.

And then it hits me. Us. The burning.

My eyes are on fire. My skin. My lungs. I can’t see.

And it all happens so fast.

Before I can move, a new hand grabs me, bruising, yanking hard.

“If you don’t come with me right now, I’ll kill her.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

RYLAN

Why is Cole at my door?

Not just ringing the doorbell, but knocking, loud and urgent. No text or call, just his voice calling through the door, “Ry. Hurry.”

Is someone hurt? It has to be bad. Did Nora or Zane get hurt on their job? Shit.

Rushing to the door, I glimpse Cole’s face on the intercom screen. It’s all hard shadows and angles, pulled tight with stress.

Fear lodges in my chest, cold and heavy. What’s wrong?

Yanking open the door, I face him. “What’s wrong?”

His eyes go dark, filled with worry and fear and—no, not that—empathy.

“Charlie’s missing.”

“She can’t be.” He’s wrong. “She just texted me ten minutes ago. She’s on her way home.”
