“That sounds more practical than romantic,” Angie protested.

“You are going as my bodyguard first, date second. Practical before romance.”

Angie playfully hit him in the arm.

“I’m really glad that you and Carolyn have become friends. I haven’t had the chance to get to know her really well, although I always try to talk to her at events. She is so shy, though, she practically shrinks against the wall.”

“I found out that she was very self-conscious, which was why we went on a makeover spree. She’ll find her voice once she realizes that she is as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside.”

“Maybe you can play matchmaker,” Noah said. “You can find her a nice wolf shifter who will sweep her off of her feet.”

“I’ve never played the part of Cupid. I think that I will just have to let nature take its course there. I truly believe that there is someone for everyone. She will meet her fated mate when the time is right,” Angie replied.

The phrase “fated mate” caught him off guard. He thought about what Zac said and how Noah couldn’t let Angie go. He wanted to ask her if she believed that they could be fated mates but thought it was too soon to bring up that topic.

Noah left Angie at her apartment and went for a run with Elijah and Keith.

“Are you taking Angie to the gala?” Elijah asked.

“Yes.”

“Everyone is going to think that you two are official,” Keith said.

“I would like for us to be. I care a great deal about her and like I’ve said before, she would be a great luna.”

“It will create a hell of a shit storm,” Keith said.

Noah looked sharply at Elijah, and Keith said, “Don’t worry. The secret is safe with me. He thought I should know so that I could have your back, too. You should have told me as soon as you found out.”

“I know. I haven’t had the chance,” Noah said. “In answer to your comment, everyone will have a fit when they find out that she’s a mundane human. However, since I’m the alpha I can do what I want and there isn’t a damn thing anyone can say or do about it. That is one good thing about my position. The rest of the job is mostly a pain in the ass.

“When are you two going to find someone to settle down with?” Noah asked.

“That is the great thing about being the younger brother. No one cares if I ever find a mate,” Keith said.

“I am waiting for my fated mate to come along,” Elijah said.

“You believe in that?”

“Yes. I’ve seen it way too many times. I think that is why you went after Angie. There was something about her when you two first laid eyes on each other that made you go after her. You would have blown off anyone else who dared to say no thanks to mating with the alpha. Even if you were curious about her, you would have found out she was human, shrugged it off, and moved on. The fact that you are ready to battle the entire pack over her tells me that she is a lot more to you. Your fated mate.”

Noah grunted. Elijah made sense. That created an entirely new problem. What in the hell was he supposed to do if Angie decided that she didn’t want to go through with the mating ceremony?

He got a text from Angie later that afternoon. My dress is forest green. Carolyn’s is cobalt blue. You need to find her a date.

Chuckling, he texted. Matchmaking is not an alpha’s duty. She will have to find her own date.

Noah and Rufus went to Angie’s apartment every night for the next couple of days. It was almost a scene from a 1950s television show. Angie greeted them at the door and had Noah sit down. She would have dinner ready soon after they got there. The only difference between her and June Cleaver, from Leave it to Beaver, was that Angie wasn’t wearing a skirt and dress shoes.

They talked about his day and they played cards or watched a movie. She liked to snuggle up next to him on the couch, which he loved. Her scent and the heat from her body were comforting and made him feel content. He had been happy before, but this was different. Noah was content.

He hated leaving at the end of the night and wanted to suggest that he stay over. Noah was pretty sure that she would say yes, but he wanted her to initiate the suggestion so that the relationship moved at a pace she felt comfortable with.

Angie told Noah that she and Carolyn would be too busy getting their hair styled, makeup applied, and nails done to see him before it was time for him to pick her up.

He offered to take Carolyn to the gala as well, but she declined. “No, thanks. I like being able to leave whenever I want to.”

Noah had always envied those who could leave early, but as the alpha, he was expected to stay until the end, or at least close to it.
