“I think she went to the restroom,” Carolyn said. “I’ll go find her.”

She rushed away, almost tripping over her feet. Noah shook his head and smiled. Carolyn was terrific.

Deciding he needed a drink, he headed for the bar. He could see the room from there.

Gerard joined him. He narrowed his eyes and pursed his lips. “Has that girl finally seen the light and agreed to go through the mating ceremony with you like she’s supposed to?”

Noah grinned and said, “I don’t know. I haven’t asked her. She did come to the shifter world, so I’m taking that as a good sign.”

“Son, you need to pull your head out of your ass. The mating ceremony has been agreed on, and you both need to just make it happen.”

Noah turned so that his entire body faced his father. Gerard was a big man, but Noah was bigger. He looked down on his father and in a low, deep voice, he said, “You need to remember who you are speaking to.”

“You are my son,” Gerard snarled.

“And I am your alpha and have been for ten years. If you wanted to continue running things, then you shouldn’t have retired. But you did and now I’m the alpha. You will not speak to me like that.”

Glaring at Noah, Gerard left the bar.

A few minutes later, Anna walked up to him and rubbed his arm. “He’s just trying to look out for you.”

“I’m a grown man and the alpha of this pack. I wouldn’t be if I wasn’t able to not only take care of my own affairs but those of the pack, too. It was his decision to retire and make me the alpha. He needs to remember that.”

“I understand both of your points of view,” Anna said. “By the way, I want you to know that I really like Angie. She is terrific.”

“I’m glad. I really like her, too. She is a very special woman and I’ve come to care a lot for her.”

“Does that mean…” Anna started to ask.

“Not you, too. I promise that you’ll be the first to know when we’ve made a decision,” Noah said.

Looking over the crowd, he saw Angie come out of the restroom and run into Carolyn. They talked for a few more minutes and then went back into the bathroom. Selena stared at them hard as she passed by them.

He thought about walking over to the restroom to make sure everything was okay when Selena stopped him.

“I was wondering if you would dance with me,” she asked, leaning toward him so that she could see down her dress.

Aware of her crush, he said, “No. I’m here with Angie.”

“You danced with Carolyn,” Selena argued.

“You’re right, I did. Not that I owe you an explanation, but I danced with her because she is my and Angie’s friend. You are neither. As far as I’m concerned, you are a member of my pack, and nothing more.”

Noah knew that sounded harsh, but with Selena, he had to be.

“Angie just needs to go back to the human world. She doesn’t belong here,” Selena snapped.

“She belongs where she wants to be,” Noah said calmly.

His hand tightened around the glass until his knuckles turned white. The vein in his neck started throbbing.

“She already told you that she wasn’t going to go through the mating ceremony with you.”

“People can change their minds, and I want you to be very careful what you say and how you say it because I am the alpha and you are walking a very thin line.”

Selena stared at him for a couple of seconds and said, “I’m sure she’ll figure out very soon that she doesn’t belong here,” and then she walked away, her ass sashaying back and forth.

“What in the hell is she up to?”
