Noah woke up the next morning to the smell of sausage cooking. He wiped the sleep out of his eyes and pulled on his slacks before stumbling into the kitchen.

“Coffee in the pot, Sleepy Head,” she said. “I’ve already taken the dogs out and started breakfast.

“Whatcha making?” he asked, his stomach rumbling.

“Biscuits and gravy, all homemade from scratch.”

He poured the coffee as she stirred the gravy. She put it on the table just as the oven beeped signaling that the biscuits were done.

She sprinkled a little bit of sausage and cheese over the dog food, and the two spoiled canines were happily eating as he took a couple of bites.

“I think this has to be one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten,” he said. “I would love to have these more often.”

Angie smiled at his words. Noah leaned forward in his chair, took another bite, and thought about what he just said. He had insinuated that they would have a lot more breakfasts together.

That would be really nice. I would like to have more breakfasts with her. I love being with her. I care a lot about her. I love her.

The thought made him stop midchew. He never thought that he would fall in love with a mundane human from the human world. Noah never believed in fated mates. Yet here he was, sitting at the table, eating breakfast with a woman he might enjoy spending the rest of his life with.

“A penny for your thoughts,” she said, putting her hand over his.

“What?” he asked, confused.

“I was talking about how my mother taught me how to make biscuits and gravy from scratch and I memorized the recipes. You didn’t say anything. I mentioned that aliens from the Goldilocks planet, Kepler-186f, also enjoyed my biscuits and gravy, although they preferred honey biscuits to buttermilk. You said that was cool.”

Laughing, Noah said, “I’m sorry. I was just thinking about business. What is the Goldilocks planet?”

“There are a few of them in the universe. They are planets that have the right temperature and atmosphere, similar to Earth’s, and could support life. They are called Goldilocks planets because they aren’t too cold and they aren’t too hot. They are just right.”

“We probably have been visited by beings from other planets. Maybe some of them are your friends. I could definitely see Sean being an alien,” Noah said.

“Maybe so. He has his moments of being weird, although I think that we all do,” she replied.

“True enough,” Noah said. “Would you like to go hiking today?”

“I would love to,” she said. “I could put together some supplies to make sandwiches so we could have a picnic.”

“Love it,” he said.

She grabbed a backpack and put in all the supplies they would need to make lunch, plus a couple baggies of dog food and bowls for food and water.

“Look, aren’t these cool,” she said. She flattened the bowls so they were a disk. Then, she popped them out to make bowls. “Space savers.”

“Clever,” he said. “I need to stop by my place. I can’t go out into the woods in my tuxedo.”

“You could, but it might not be comfortable.”

Angie oohed and aahed over his house. It was built like a log cabin but was much larger. It had an open floor plan with the kitchen, dining room, and living room connected. The living room and dining room shared a fireplace. The master bedroom was upstairs and had a fireplace. The bathroom was larger than most people’s bedrooms and the walk-in closet was big enough to fit another bed into. He had a game room and a study in the basement, as well as his laundry room and two bedrooms.

“Wow. This place is incredible,” she said.

“I have a hot tub out back on the deck, too.”

He put several bottles of water in his backpack and they set out.

“You know, things look a little different when I hike up here in human form. I always find peace among the trees, plants, animals, and even insects, but I have to slow down when I’m on two legs instead of four. It’s like I’m looking at them differently.”

“I’ve always envied shifters. It would be so amazing to run fast through the woods and just be free. I guess there are benefits to both sides.”
