“That was why I turned Noah down to begin with. He was the one who chased me down and asked me to come back here. If you have a problem with me being human, you should talk to Noah.”

She crossed her arms and leaned against the counter. Angie maintained eye contact, not wanting her grandfather to think that she was going to back down.

He took a step toward her, grabbed her arm, and said, “Pack your stuff and go back to the human world where you belong.”

“Old man, you’d better get your hands off of me and back off,” Angie said in a deadly cold voice.

Apollo growled at him and sat down right next to Angie. Abner dropped his hand but didn’t step back.

“I will leave if Noah wants me to leave. Not until then. Noah is still the alpha and his word goes. He asked me here, so I’ll stay until he asks me to leave.”

“You aren’t a shifter so you aren’t part of the pack. Noah is not your alpha,” Abner spit at her.

“That is for Noah to decide. I love Noah and I intend to go through the mating ceremony with him if he wants,” Angie said.

“We’ll just have to see about that,” Abner said. He growled and stomped out the door.

“That was a little overdramatic,” Angie said.

Carolyn shook her head. “He wasn’t a happy camper.”

“Is everyone going to react like that?”

“I don’t think so. It’s personal for him because you are his granddaughter and he was kept in the dark.”

“You’re right,” Angie conceded.

“Noah has to know about this,” Carolyn said.

“I’ll tell him tonight,” Angie said. “Do you think that I should go back to the human world?”

“No. You love Noah. I’m sure he loves you, too. You should stay.”

“I don’t want him to go through the mating ceremony just because he feels obligated to since he brought me here,” Angie said.

Carolyn made a sound that was a cross between a cough and a laugh. “Noah isn’t going to do anything that he doesn’t want to do. There is no way in the world he would go through the mating ceremony with you unless he wanted to.”

“You’re right,” Angie said.

“Are you going to be okay? I have to get ready for work, but I can call out if you need me.”

“I’m fine. If you called out of work every time someone got ugly with me, you’d be unemployed. Besides, I have Apollo here with me.”

Carolyn nodded and said, “Okay, if you’re sure.”

“I am.”

About an hour after Carolyn left, someone banged on Angie’s door.

“Again? What now?”

Just as she was about to look through the peephole, the door flew open, knocking Angie back. Four men burst into her apartment. Two of them grabbed her arms. She used the men as a brace and lifted herself up. She kicked at a third man, connecting with his stomach.

Apollo lunged at the fourth man, who shifted into a wolf. The wolf was bigger and stronger, and soon Apollo was lying on the floor with several gashes in his body and chunks missing from his flesh in several places.

The wolf was about to go for Apollo’s throat.

“Alright,” Angie screamed. “I’ll do whatever you want if you leave my dog alone.”
