Someone gently lifted up her head and brushed a lock of hair out of her face. “I’m here.”

“Noah,” she whispered.

“You’re okay,” he said.

She reached up to caress his face. Her arm felt like a million tons, and she couldn’t hold it up.

“Apollo.”

“He was hurt, but he’ll be fine.”

She wanted to nod, but couldn’t. Closing her eyes, she let her head fall back. The darkness crept in around the edges of her consciousness, ready to consume her.

“Angie, open your eyes,” Noah urged.

She tried, but it was hard. It was easier to keep them closed.

He lifted her into his arms and started the long walk back down the mountain. Noah tried to be careful, but he had left his clothes, including his boots, in the truck. Finally, she heard noises and several people rushed toward them. Noah quickly dressed after Angie was transferred to a stretcher. A warm blanket covered her, but it still wasn’t enough to keep out the chill. Noah held her hand and kept talking to her, telling her to keep her eyes open.

“Apollo is waiting for you. You can’t let him down. You can’t let me or Rufus down, either. Carolyn is at your apartment. She is going to be your personal nurse.”

Angie tried to squeeze his hand, but it took too much effort. Rufus nudged her from time to time.

“Good boy, Rufus,” she whispered. “Such a good boy.”

“I might have to try some of your peanut butter doggie treats if they are so good,” Noah said. “If I like them, you’ll have to make them all the time.”

Angie tried to laugh, but couldn’t.

Finally, they were back at her apartment. Noah carefully lifted her from the stretcher and laid her in the bed. Apollo was already lying on the bed with his head on the pillow. He had several bandages on him.

“Hi, Baby. I missed you. Mama loves you,” Angie whispered.

Apollo woofed softly and put his paw on her shoulder.

A woman bustled into the room. “I’m Doctor Jen. Let’s see what we have here.”

The doctor carefully looked her over. She sewed up several of the gashes.

“There’s not much I can do about the chunks torn out. We just have to treat them for infection and give them time to heal,” Doctor Jen said. “You have a lot of serious injuries. Carolyn is on her way back from the hospital with some blood. You will need at least one transfusion, if not two.”

“What now?” Noah asked anxiously.

“We wait. I wouldn’t be so concerned if she was a shifter because shifters heal so quickly. However, since she is human, it’s going to take some time. That means that she is at a greater risk of infection. Right now, it’s iffy. She’s lost a lot of blood and she has suffered some significant injuries.”

Noah groaned and squeezed Angie’s hand.

Carolyn came in and set up the IV pole. She started the blood transfusion.

“Angie, Carolyn will call me when the transfusion is done. I’ll come back to see if you need another. Noah, let me look at your wounds.”

“I’m fine,” Noah said, brushing her away.

“Alpha, take your damn shirt off now before I take it off for you.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Angie wanted to laugh, but it took too much energy.
