“You’d better, or I’ll come and get you,” Flora declared.

“I know you will,” Angie said.

Angie next called Thomas and Betsy. They both threatened to come as well. It took Angie several minutes to talk them out of it. She was exhausted after she was done with the phone calls. She went straight to sleep.

The next morning, Angie was able to eat the scrambled eggs that Carolyn made for her.

“You haven’t gone home at all, have you?” Angie asked.

“I do when Noah comes. I take a shower and stuff,” Carolyn said.

“You are amazing. I’m so sorry that your life has been turned upside down because of me.”

“It’s not your fault. You didn’t kidnap you and tear the hell out of yourself,” Carolyn said. “I told you that I would have your back. I’m not much of a fighter, but I’m a pretty decent nurse.”

“You are a terrific nurse,” Angie said.

Over the next few days, Noah dropped in, usually for a couple minutes at a time. He always seemed to be in a rush.

He always said, “I wish I could stay longer, but duty calls.” Then, Noah would brush a kiss across her lips and leave.

No one else in the pack came to see her. Angie figured it was because she was human.

“I want to tell him that I love him,” Angie said.

“You should,” Carolyn encouraged. “I’m sure that he loves you, too. He worried about you constantly. He called several times to check up on you.”

“I don’t know what to do. I love him and I want to spend the rest of my life with him. However, I know that I’m not welcome. Can our love survive the pack’s animosity?”

“Wait until you are healed and then have an honest conversation with him. I’m sure that the two of you will figure out what’s best.”

I hope so, Angie thought. Is there a solution where we could win? Either I go back to the human world with a broken heart, or I stay here and face the hatred.

Noah

“What do you want to do with him?” Elder Fredrick asked.

He and Elder Cyrus, along with the other elders and Gerard sat in the conference room. Abner had been in a cold, dark cell in the back of the cave and had been for several days. He had a cot, blankets, and a bucket. He was given food and water three times a day.

Now, the older man sat at the end of the table, opposite Noah.

“My first instinct is execution, but I have decided that he will go to Charred Cove Island to do hard labor for the rest of his life,” Noah said.

Noah addressed Abner directly. “Your actions almost killed my betrothed and her dog. They also caused me, my brother, and my lieutenant injuries. Two men are dead and two have already been sent to Charred Cove Island because you decided to pay the men ten thousand dollars each to kidnap and dispose of your granddaughter.”

“She is no blood relation to me,” Abner snarled.

“Be that as it may, she is still your legal kin. You still orchestrated this heinous act. I hope that you live a long life and enjoy your stay at Charred Cove Island,” Noah said.

It was a barren island at the very north pole of the shifter world. Supplies were brought in by ships once a month. Living conditions were primitive but adequate. Prisoners were forced to do hard labor, matching their physical capabilities. They were well fed and well cared for, so prisoners tended to live long lives on the island, whether they wanted to or not.

“Don’t you think the punishment is too harsh? He was just trying to protect the pack from being infected by the human luna,” Gerard said.

Noah looked at his father, his eyes cold and hard. “My decree is final. I suggest that you be very careful what you say next or you will join him.”

Gerard pressed his lips tightly together, glanced at Abner, and sat back in his chair.
