Crossing her fingers on both hands, Carolyn said, “Of course not.”

“Do you think we could go to the ceremonial hall? Even if Noah isn’t talking to me, I think he should know about the baby.”

“He’ll be excited, I’m sure,” Carolyn said.

When they arrived, Carolyn got out but leaned against her car. “I’m just going to wait outside for you.”

With butterflies in her stomach that had nothing to do with the baby, Angie slowly walked inside. She walked to his office and peeked in. The room was empty.

“Can I help you?” a nasally voice asked.

“I’m looking for Noah,” Angie said.

“I bet you are,” the man said. “I’m Elder Fredrick. You’re that human who got one of our members exiled to Charred Cove Island. You came between our alpha and his father.”

“My grandfather brought on his own punishment. I had nothing to do with that,” Angie protested.

“You had everything to do with that. You brought your filth to this pack,” the elder spat at her.

“Noah asked me to come to the shifter world with him knowing full well that I was not a shifter,” Angie countered. “As for any disagreements between Noah and his father – well, Noah is a man and quite capable of making his own decisions. Gerard isn’t a very pleasant individual to begin with.”

“How dare you say that?” the elder asked, taking a step closer to Angie, spittle flying out of his mouth.

“Sir, you are in my bubble. I’ve gone through hell the last couple of weeks, and I’m in no mood for you. Take a step back,” Angie growled.

Apparently, the old man believed the underlying threat in her words because he did as he was told.

“You aren’t welcome here,” the elder said. “You should have taken the hint when Alpha cut communication with you. I don’t know how things work in your world, but mundane humans are not welcome in the Silent Paw Pack. Don’t you think that you have caused enough trouble for the Silent Paw Pack? You are a disgrace. Even if Noah wanted to mate with you, he would be forbidden to do so. Go back to the human world before you humiliate yourself even more.”

A million thoughts raced through Angie’s mind. She wanted to protest, but she had to admit that Noah had ghosted her. Maybe it would be best if she just went back and raised their child alone. However, her pride would never let Elder Fredrick know that he got to her.

She smirked at him and said, “You take care now. I’ll make sure that Noah is made aware of your sentiment so he knows what he is dealing with.”

Angie was sure that the old man’s face paled as she walked by him.

“How did it go?” Carolyn asked as they drove off.

“It didn’t,” Angie said.

She told Carolyn what the elder had said.

“Well, damn,” Carolyn said.

Angie looked at her, surprised. It was the first time she had heard Carolyn even come close to cursing.

Carolyn reluctantly helped Angie pack. “I wish you wouldn’t go. You’re the first real friend I’ve ever had.”

“There is no life for me here,” Angie said. “In the human world, I have friends who love me. I have projects and a home. Why don’t you come with me?”

Carolyn shook her head sadly. “My life is here. I have a good job and thanks to you, I might even make friends with the people I work with. A couple of the girls asked if I wanted to go to the club with them.”

“That is so awesome,” Angie said. “But you had better come to the human world, or Apollo and I will come back and kidnap you.”

“I have some vacation time coming. I promise I’ll come visit.”

“Everything in the apartment that I bought is yours. New dishes, pots and pans, barely used bedclothes, and everything else,” Angie said.

Angie wrote a quick note for Noah, left it on the dining room table, and walked out the door.
