Noah glared at the man until he seemed to shrink into his skin. Then, he laughed, which seemed to terrify everyone around him even more.

“Angie is my fated mate. I will not be with anyone else but her. So, it looks like I have some choices here. One, I could send you to join Abner on the island, which, to be honest, is my first inclination, and go through the mating ceremony with Angie anyway. Two, I could simply tell you that I’m the alpha, I make the decisions, and that Angie will be your luna. You can either suck it up or leave the pack.”

Everyone stared at him, holding their breath. “I love Angie. It is a love that goes deep into my soul. I would never do anything that would hurt her or make her uncomfortable. I will resign my position and move to the human world to be with her, and you all can go to hell. My brother, Keith, will make a fine alpha.”

Noah went into his office, grabbed a box, and started packing up his stuff. He could hear everyone whispering outside of his office.

His mother poked her head in and asked, “Are you sure you want to do this? Is Angie worth it?”

“I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life. She is worth it. I would rather live in the human world with her people than be here with a bunch of ignorant bigots,” Noah said. “Keith will do a terrific job as alpha.”

He carried the first box out of his office and went back for the second. He stepped out into the ceremonial hall and Elder Fredrick said, “Wait, Alpha.”

“You have the wrong man,” Noah said.

“Please wait,” the elder said. “We talked. You have been a commendable leader these last ten years. Our pack has prospered. You recently negotiated a truce with a pack that has been a thorn in our side for decades.”

Noah shifted from one foot to the other, staring at the elder as if to say, “Get on with it.”

“We have to trust your judgment and your choice of luna. If you truly believe that Angie will be good for our pack, then we will not stand in your way. We will show her the honor and respect that she deserves as our luna,” Elder Cyrus said.

“If we show the rest of the pack that we accept her, they will as well,” Elder Fredrick said.

Noah glanced at his father. “Don’t look at me. If you want to ruin your life with a mundane human, go for it. I’ll not give my blessing.”

“I don’t need your blessing and really don’t care if you approve. All I want from you is your promise to stay away from her if you can’t treat her with the respect that she deserves.”

All of the elders turned around and stared at him.

“Fine,” Gerard said. “I’m washing my hands of this entire mistake.”

“Please put your things back in your office and go get our luna,” Anna said, softly.

“Yes, please. I don’t want to be the damned alpha. You work too hard,” Keith said, stepping up from the back of the room.

“I thought you were going home and going to bed,” Noah said.

“I was, but I had to take care of some paperwork first. I heard the commotion and then I heard you throw my name out there,” Keith said. “If they didn’t pull their heads out of their asses, I was coming with you to the human world.”

“I hope Angie has a big house because I would be coming, too,” Elijah said.

Rufus barked as if to say, “Me, too,” and everyone laughed.

“I suppose you told the elders about your decisions while I was packing up my office,” Noah said.

“We did. We told them that they were fools and that they would either have to make our father the alpha again or go scratching in the dirt for an alpha because neither Elijah nor me would be available,” Keith said.

“They knew we weren’t playing,” Elijah said, his arms crossed over his chest.

“I told you we had your backs,” Keith said.

“You didn’t have mine. You had your own because you didn’t want the job.” Noah laughed.

“Maybe a little of both,” Elijah said. “Now, go get your woman before she closes up the portal and no one can ever get through again.”

Noah stepped into Sean’s cool basement and took two steps at a time going upstairs.

“Why in the world are you here?” Sean growled. “That portal isn’t meant to be a revolving door.”
