The sun glowed orange and dipped behind the trees. Reluctantly, Angie and Noah got up and found their clothes. Her stomach growled loudly.

Grinning, slightly embarrassed, she said, “I don’t usually skip lunch.”

“Me either and I’m starved. Since we both need to eat, let me buy you dinner.”

Angie hesitated. She didn’t want to spend any more time with Noah. She was attracted to him and it wasn’t a good idea to be around him. He was right that they both needed to eat, though.

“Okay,” she said.

“Howlers’ or do you have someplace else in mind?”

“Sean’s place is great. I haven’t eaten there in a long time. I usually make dinner at home. We’ll have to drop Apollo off at home, first, which means that Thomas and Betsy will spoil him more than I do.”

The place was packed when they walked in, but they managed to find a booth in the corner of the room. Trivia questions flashed on the television screens that were hung on the wall.

“What famous philosopher said, “‘I think, therefore I am?’”

“René Descartes,” they both said at the same time.

Laughing, Angie asked, “You know philosophy?”

“Some. I’m not a complete Neanderthal, you know.”

“I would have never guessed,” Angie said. “I like Descartes’ philosophy because I take it further than I think he meant it.”

“How so?”

“He meant that we can’t trust our senses because they lie to us. Flora’s father lost one of his legs due to diabetes, but sometimes he can feel it. Just because a person can feel, see, or whatever, doesn’t mean they exist. The only proof of existence is thought.”

“True enough. So how do you take it further?” he asked.

“Henry Ford said, ‘If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.’ Not only does a person exist if they think, but they can be extremely successful if they think it,” she said.

“True,” he said. “So, what do you think about Jean-Paul Sartre and existentialism?”

Angie truly enjoyed the philosophical theories they discussed and was disappointed when the evening ended. He walked her up to her front door. After a brief hesitation, he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close to him. She could feel his hard body against hers. Angie heard his heartbeat and felt his breath on her cheek.

He let her go and smiled. “See you later.”

Noah waited until Angie was safely inside before he drove away. She leaned against the door, inhaling his lingering scent. If a hug could damn near bring her to her knees, what would his kiss do?

Noah

“How’s it going in the human world?” Elijah asked.

“Okay,” Noah said.

“You sound like you’re in a good mood.”

“I am. I spent the day hanging out with Angie. We had such a good time that we forgot to eat lunch.”

“You forgot to eat lunch? I don’t believe it,” Elijah said.

“We went on the mountain, and I shifted and ran for a while. When I came back she was playing in the creek with her dog. I jumped in and we had a splashing contest.”

“She didn’t shift, too?” Elijah asked.
