Once she got back to her hotel room and enjoyed the hottest water she could stand pouring over her body, she picked up her computer. She hoped that no one would be able to track her IP address to Angel’s Creek.

She wanted to be able to stay long enough to put away some money that could keep her going to wherever she landed next and she could find another job. Deep in her heart, though, she wished that Declan would just decide that she wasn’t worth his time and as long as she was nowhere near the pack, she couldn’t cause any trouble. However, it was just as her mother used to say, “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.”

Sandra had sent her an email.

I hope you are safe wherever you are. Declan came to me and asked me if I knew how you got out. I think that he suspects it was me but can’t prove it. He also asked if I knew where you went to. I’m glad that I could honestly tell him that I didn’t know.

Olivia typed back a reply.

I’m good. I found a nice town to stay and earn some money before moving on. Do you think that he will try to hunt me down?

Sandra was online and immediately replied.

I wish I could say no, but he thinks that you’ve cursed him.

Olivia hung her head. That was what she was afraid of.

Is he angrier because I escaped or because of the prophecy?

Sandra replied with, A little of both, I suspect. Just keep your head down and be safe. Love you.

Wiping a tear out of her eye, she said, Love you.

She knew that Sandra was likely terrified of being caught communicating with Olivia. Declan wasn’t psychic, but if he wanted to, he could probably find a way to track Sandra’s emails.

There was another email from Olivia’s mother.

Declan came by and wanted to know where you were. He threatened us if we were hiding you. He figured out that we honestly had no clue and weren’t hiding you, although we would if that’s what it would take to keep you safe. I think that he has someone watching the house. Please be careful and know that all of us here love you so very much.

Olivia’s head fell back on her shoulders, and she sobbed. How could this old woman’s words bring so much harm to her family and friends? These stupid words that had absolutely no meaning and no power had devastated her life and the lives of everyone around her. How could Declan be so superstitious and gullible? For an alpha, he was being very stupid and ignorant.

She quickly typed out a message: Safe for now. Love you guys.

Closing her computer, she closed her eyes and just hoped that they couldn’t figure out where she was through the emails, if they managed to get access to the emails. She knew that Sandra and her mother would delete them as soon as they read them.

Her heart ached to go back home. She missed working in the kitchen with her mother, who could cook or bake anything from scratch and make it taste like a gourmet chef created it. Olivia wanted to play soccer with her siblings and hang out and talk about life with her father. She missed Sandra, who was like a sister to her.

“Stop it. You can’t go back home and there is no use to crying over what you can’t have. You have a new life, and you’ll just have to figure out how to love it,” she told herself, sternly. “Surely, Declan won’t spend the rest of his life hunting me. He’ll get tired of it, and I can find a nice place to settle down.”

In spite of the lecture she’d just had with herself, she cuddled up with a brown and yellow teddy bear she’d had since she was a baby and cried herself to sleep.

Zac

“Alpha, you need to come to the conference room, now,” Elder Ivan said.

The urgency in the older man’s voice told Zac that this wasn’t about an ordinary meeting that Zac planned on avoiding. He was dismayed to see Matthias Gentry, alpha of the Iron Claw bear shifter clan, pacing the conference room. Lucius Zehr, the alpha of the dragon shifter clan, was sitting at the of the table. A couple of alphas from other shifter clans were also in the room.

Oh, shit, Zac thought. This isn’t going to be good.

“Adam, one of our adolescent shifters, has gone missing,” Matthias said. “He went out yesterday for a run with his buddies. They got separated somehow, and Adam never made it back.”

Zac sat down hard in his chair. Seven shifters from different clans and packs had gone missing over the last few months.

“It’s got to be that evil witch, Marsden,” Lucius growled, banging his fist on the table. “There have been whispers that she managed to get her hands on a grimoire that has a particularly powerful spell that would allow her to control all aspects of the supernatural world.”

Marvin, Lucius’ second in command, said, “To accomplish this, she is looking for several relics that are supposed to help her. One is a scepter of shadows that would allow her to control all the shadows of the world. The second is an amulet of souls. It contains souls of powerful witches, wizards, and warlocks. The wearer of the amulet can control the magic of the souls contained within it. The third relic is the crown of eternal night. It is covered in black diamonds and would allow her to communicate with and manipulate nocturnal creatures.”
