“How real do you think those relics are?” Zac asked, thinking that they sounded like something that would come out of Grimms’ fairytales.

Marvin shrugged and said, “Honestly, I don’t know. They are just whispers. However, we can’t discount that magical relics like that don’t exist. We have seen for ourselves that sometimes objects have power, either naturally or embedded by another being.”

“According to the legend, the relics, along with the elixir and spells, would give her the power that she craved,” Lucius said. “But, even if all of it is myth, or if she just believes it will give her power, she has to be stopped. She is taking our people. That isn’t to be tolerated. We have to stop her from hurting more shifters and possibly mundane humans, who are even more vulnerable to her.”

“How are we going to be able to find her and stop her? We have no idea where she and the rest of her coven might be hiding out,” Zac asked. “It’s not like we could just walk into her store and end her there.”

Marsden owned a shop in town, The Celestial Wand, where she sold crystals, bags, potions, and other items, mostly to tourists who passed through. However, it was rumored that she had been known to sell genuine voodoo dolls, hex bags, gris-gris bags designed to bring bad fortune to people, and potions that manipulated, harmed, and perhaps killed people. She had a reputation of laying curses on and hurting anyone who got in her way. There was no way that the shifters could take her at her store. She and her cronies would destroy the shifters.

“We’ve got scouts out looking for signs of her lair in the woods,” Marvin said.

“As do we, and I think every other clan,” Zac said. “I’ll send out more to try to find your missing cub.”

He turned around to face Ian, who was standing behind him, arms crossed, with a stone-cold face. “As many of our people as we can spare. Find out from Matthias and Adam’s friends where he was last seen and fan out, in pairs.”

“Yes, Alpha,” Ian said, nodding his head at Zac before rushing out the door to carry out his orders.

Zac knew the pain of losing a pack member. They had lost two pack members at the beginning of the ration of missing shifters. He and other pack members routinely looked for the them as often as they could, even though they knew in their souls that the shifters were dead.

The meeting broke up and Zac went back to his office with a heavy heart. Losing the clan members was devastating, and Zac hated feeling helpless.

Tami, his personal assistant and secretary, knocked lightly on his door and then walked in with a handful of small papers.

“You’ve had several phone calls and a couple of visitors since you’ve been out. I’ve taken care of most of them, but there are a couple that need your attention,” she said.

“Set them down. Thank you,” he said.

“It’s a terrible thing to hear about that cub being missing.”

“Yes, it is,” Zac replied. “Hopefully, we can find him in time.”

He hated the doubt that was evident in his voice.

She hesitated in front of his desk.

“Is there something else?” Zac asked.

“Yes. My family is having a cookout this weekend. I was wondering if you would like to go to it with me,” Tami said, twisting a lock of her hair around her finger.

Zac had known for a long time that she had a thing for him.

“I’m flattered by the invitation, but I won’t be able to attend,” he said.

Her face flushed red, and she nodded. He could see that she was clearly upset.

Ian came in as she was leaving. He had a map of the mountain in his hands with grids marked off.

“I got with Marvin and a few other clan lieutenants. We marked off the mountain and are sending pairs out to each section. We hope that we can cover each section and try to get some kind of clue as to where Adam might be. The dragons are going to fly overhead and relay any spots that look suspicious so the ground crews can check them out.”

“Excellent. Hopefully, he can be found in time,” Zac said.

“I hope,” Ian said. Then, he nodded at Tami and said, “It sounds like you have another problem to deal with.”

Zac sighed and said, “Yeah. I’ve been thinking for a while that I might need to find another position for her and find a different personal assistant. The only reason that I haven’t yet is because she is so efficient.”

“Has her feelings for you gotten in the way of her work or made things uncomfortable between you guys yet?” Ian asked.

“Not yet,” Zac said.
