“It was good,” Zac said. “I really like her. She is pretty wonderful.”

“Do I see a mating ceremony in the future?”

“It’s waaaay too early for that,” Zac said, laughing.

A couple of days later, Connor knocked on his office door.

Zac jumped up from his chair and hugged Conner, who was a slightly shorter version of Zac.

“Brother, you didn’t tell me you were coming to town,” Zac said.

“I figured you followed the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association schedule,” Conner said, teasingly.

“Usually, I do get notifications when you are scheduled to be in town. Don’t know why I didn’t this time,” Zac said. “How long are you here for?”

“A couple of days. Are you coming tonight?”

“Of course,” Zac said. “You staying with me?”

“Yeah. Mom always fusses too much, and Dad tells me that I should find a position with the wolf pack and settle down here,” Conner said.

Olivia worked the afternoon shift and happened to get off in time to go to the rodeo. Zac explained to her that the horses were specifically trained to buck, and they were actually very well taken care of. The bulls had a flank strap wrapped around their back end that was a cue for them to buck, but it didn’t hurt them at all, so she enjoyed that part of the show. However, she turned her back during the calf roping competition because she knew it hurt the calves and they were terrified.

“I want a huge ranch where I could take them and they could live happily ever after,” she said. “At least until they were turned into steaks and such.”

Conner won first place in the bronc busting category and second in steer wrestling.

Zac laughed. He took her back to her hotel room, kissed her, and then made sure she was safely inside before heading back home.

“What have you been up, to?” Zac asked.

Conner described the last few states he’d visited. “I love seeing all of the different states and all their beauty. I can’t imagine settling down in one place for too long.”

“Not even for a woman?” Zac asked.

“Nope, not even then. Maybe when I get too old to compete, but not anytime soon,” he said.

“Too many hard landings like you had last year after El Diablo bucked you off and you’ll be a crippled old man by the time you’re forty,” Zac said.

“That horse is a beast,” Conner said. He took a sip of beer and then asked, “What about you? That was a pretty little filly you had on your arm tonight.”

Zac hesitated and then said, “There is something about her. Her scent caught my attention the first time we came in contact and something deep inside of me screamed fated mate.”

“Wow,” Conner said, sitting back in his chair.

“I do have feelings for her, but I can’t describe what they are. I’m not in love with her, so I’m not ready to ask her to go through the mating ceremony with me. At the same time, though, I can’t seem to escape those two words.”

“Give it time,” Conner said. “You’ve got all the time in the world to figure things out.”

“I don’t know about that. She came to Angel’s Creek mysteriously. She said that she had a relationship that went bad, and she just wants to start over, but I think that there is a lot more to it than that. Especially since she says she can’t stay long. Just a few weeks and then she’s moving on.”

“It sounds like she’s definitely running from something, but if you two are fated for each other, then you will be to that. The fates never let anyone slip out of their grasp once they find a place for them in their tapestry of life,” Conner said.

“We’ll see,” Zac replied.
