“Really,” Tami said, a storm cloud crossing her face. She looked like she was about to say something else about Olivia, but Zac cut her off.

“I need you to go to this morning’s meeting and take good notes for me,” Zac said. “I’m going to opt out of it.”

“The elders aren’t going to like it,” she warned.

“Good thing I’m the alpha,” Zac said.

Tami nodded and walked out, her nose stuck in the air. She was purposely shaking her ass in her overly tight skirt.

“Is it too early for a shot of whiskey?” he asked himself.

“It’s five o’clock somewhere,” Ian said, sticking his head in the door. “I’ll buy the first round.”

Zac laughed and said, “What’s up?”

“Well, it might not be anything, but you know how we keep an eye on things in town?”

“Yeah?”

“There are a couple of guys in town, staying at one of the nicer hotels. They are driving a truck with Nebraska tags. A couple of the storekeepers and restaurant managers said that they were asking whether there’s been any newcomers coming to town in the last few weeks,” Ian reported.

Zac sat back in his chair and ran his fingers through his hair. “Really,” he said, sighing heavily, wondering if this had anything to do with Olivia.

“Of course, they all told them that they didn’t know of anyone, but they all thought that it was a little suspicious, so they let me know. They know about Olivia and that she’s your friend,” Ian said.

“I’m glad they did,” Zac said. “See what you can find out about them.”

“Will do.”

Zac drummed his fingers on the desk, trying to decide whether he was going to confront Olivia now or wait until he knew more about the situation. He didn’t think that she would lie to him, but she might continue to be evasive with her answers.

His phone rang. It was Sean.

“Can you stop by the bar? We need to talk,” Sean said.

Olivia

Olivia sat down at one of the back tables and asked for some chicken fried chicken and country green beans for lunch. She had ordered that for Zac, and it actually sounded pretty damn good.

Sean slid into the seat across from her and studied her face for a minute.

“I’m going to need you to tell me everything about why you left home and the truth. All of it,” he said sternly.

Olivia stiffened and her eyes opened wide. She glanced over at the bar where Jade usually worked. She stood back there with her arms crossed over her chest.

“Jade didn’t tell me anything, although I had a suspicion that she knew more than she was telling me,” Sean said. “A couple of men came in looking for you. They asked if there had been a woman who came into town in the last few weeks. They had a picture of you. Of course, neither I nor anyone else here had any idea who they might be talking about. My guess is that no one in town will say that they saw you. But, I want to know who those men were and why they were looking for you.”

Her heart started thundering in her chest and a huge knot formed in her stomach. Her throat closed up and she couldn’t breathe. Her hands started shaking and all of the blood drained from her chest.

Finally, when she was able to speak, Olivia said, “It’s going to sound stupid and overly dramatic. I wouldn’t believe it if I was hearing the story from someone else.”

“I’ll believe you because you are an amazing woman, and I don’t think that you’re capable of lying to me. I haven’t known you for very long, but I do know that you’re a good person. So, spill it.”

She ran her fingers through her hair and said, “I was betrothed to the alpha of our pack, Declan. I wasn’t particularly thrilled about it because he’s not a nice man. He can be charming and nice, to fool people and get what he wants, but inside, he is cruel and mean.”

Sean looked at her, waiting for her to get to the part of the story he wouldn’t believe.
