“I guess so,” Ian said. “I do think that curses are self-fulfilling. If you are told that something bad is going to happen, then you are going to look for it.”

“I’m with you on that,” Zac said. “Have you heard anything else about our friends from Nebraska?”

“Not in the last couple of days. Either they figured out that she wasn’t here or they got frustrated because no one would tell them what they wanted to know,” Ian said.

“Or, they could just be waiting it out somewhere, waiting to catch a glimpse of her.”

“There is that,” Ian acknowledged. “I’ll keep you informed,” he said as he left to take care of his duties.

Later on, as Zac was gassing up his truck, Marsden came out of the convenience store. She looked as though she was looking through him, examining his soul.

“I thought that you guys ran everywhere. I didn’t know that you needed vehicles,” Marsden said.

“And, I didn’t know your broom used gasoline, so I guess we’re even,” Zac said, trying to keep his voice as cordial as possible.

She laughed as though that was the funniest joke that she had ever heard.

“You need to stay away from the shifters, and especially leave the younglings alone,” Zac said.

“But, you’re all so entertaining,” she said, looking bored.

“We know what you’re up to. You won’t get away with it. We’ll stop you,” Zac promised.

“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about,” Marsden said, looking amused.

Then, a serious look passed over her face, and her eyes darkened.

“Olivia is not only in grave danger, but she will bring trouble to you and yours. She will bring danger to your doorstep,” Marsden intoned.

Then, without another word, she abruptly left.

Zac felt as though a hand had reached through his body and squeezed his soul. In spite of downplaying prophecies earlier with Ian, an electric bolt of fear coursed through him. Deep inside, he was afraid that there was truth to Marsden’s words.

The last place that Zac wanted to be was back in his office, but he had an appointment that he had to keep. He hoped that as soon as it was done, he could slip out and call it a day. No such luck. His father seemed to be waiting for him. He didn’t mince any words with greetings and got straight to the point.

“I’ve heard through the grape vine that you’ve been seeing a lot of that new waitress who works for Sean. What’s her name, Olive?”

“Her name is Olivia. She and I have been spending time together,” Zac acknowledged.

“Is she a wolf shifter?”

“Yes, Dad, she is. What difference does that make?” Zac asked.

“I was just wondering whether you are going to go through the mating ceremony with her,” John asked.

“I think that it’s a little too soon for that. We’ve only been dating a little while. We’re still getting to know each other,” Zac protested.

“It’s time you took a mate. It might be a good idea for it to be with someone from our pack. You know Tami comes from a great family. She’s smart and beautiful, too,” John said, watching Zac’s face.

“Ugh. She got to you, too,” Zac groaned. “Dad, I promise you that if she was the last female on Earth, I still wouldn’t get with her.”

“Well, whoever you get with, as you say, it needs to be sooner rather than later. A pack needs a good luna,” he said.

“As I’ve told you before, I will go through the mating ceremony when I’m ready and after I’ve found the woman who is right for me. This conversation is over,” Zac said, firmly, staring at his father, daring the older man to say another word.

John was silent for a minute and then said, “Come by for dinner. Your mother misses you.”

“That’s how you end every conversation,” Zac said, shaking his head.
