Tami shot her the nastiest look as Olivia left Zac’s office. Olivia was positive that if looks could kill, she would have withered away on the spot.

“Have a nice day,” Olivia said, sweetly, as she left.

She honestly didn’t know whether she was trying to be nice or if she was trying to be a bitch. Probably a combination of the two.

Olivia checked her email when she got back to her room. She had one from her mother.

Your grandmother passed away last night. You know that she’s been sick for a while. She knows why you left, and she wanted me to let you know how much she loves you.

Ignoring the tears that streamed down her face, Olivia typed, I love her so much, and Mom, I’m so sorry. I know how much this hurts you. I wish I could be there for you.

Olivia was surprised that her mother happened to be online at the same time.

I understand. Everyone will understand why you aren’t here for the funeral.

I love and miss you, Mom.

We all love and miss you, too. Stay safe.

Olivia turned off the wi-fi and shut the computer. She held the teddy bear tightly and cried. For a moment, she felt so alone.

Her phone blinged ten minutes later. Jade wanted to know if Olivia was up for a run. Thinking that would help her, she typed yes.

Be there in ten.

Olivia told Jade about her grandmother as they drove to the trail.

“I’m so sorry,” Jade said.

“Thank you. You would have loved her. She was sassy. Full of spit and vinegar, as we say back home.”

“You must have gotten it from her,” Jade said. “I’m sure I would have loved her. I know that there are no words that I can say to make you feel better, but I’m here for you.”

“Thank you. It means a lot.”

They spent about an hour trotting through the woods and found themselves back at their favorite spot.

“I decided to surprise Zac at his office today,” Olivia said.

“Oh, yeah? I bet he loved that. He adores you,” Jade said.

“Zac liked it, but his personal assistant – not so much. She basically told me to back off and called me the rag-tag omega of a different pack.”

“No, she didn’t.” Jade laughed.

“Oh, yeah. I was informed that he had to choose a mate from within the pack,” Olivia said.

“I wonder if Zac knows about this requirement?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t tell him about the conversation between me and Tami, but he’s not a stupid man.”

“No, he’s not,” Jade said. “He’s sexy, smart, and charming. Perfect. If I wasn’t in love with Marvin, I might have given a little chase myself. Are you in love with him yet?”

“No, but I think I’m getting there. I’m so scared of getting hurt,” Olivia confessed.

“Girl, I’ve seen the way he looks at you. He’s already falling for you. Zac might not know it yet, but he is,” Jade said.

“I’m scared that Declan is going to wreck things,” Olivia said. “I feel like he’s a dark thundercloud that is constantly hovering over my head.”
