Zac was impatient as the bear clan’s doctor looked him and Ian over. Zac’s eye had been scratched, but would heal, as would the bite wounds and claw marks. Ian would take a little longer to heal because of the depth of the rips in his body. However, the doctor said he would be okay.

He recommended that they both stay at least the night in the hospital, but both of them refused.

“Wolf shifters are just as damned stubborn as bear shifters,” the doc proclaimed.

Jade joined them in the waiting room soon after. She had gone to the hospital when she heard about Benny. “Benny has some broken bones, but he is going to be okay. He was already screaming to be let out of the hospital, but the doc refused to let him go.”

“Sounds like Benny,” Ian said.

“You guys look like hell,” Jade said.

“You should see the other guys,” Sean said. “Literally.”

“I bet,” Jade said. She put her hand on Zac’s arm and said, “She’ll be okay. She’s strong, and she won’t let this bastard win.”

“I hope so,” Zac said.

The other shifters who had gone to the mountain with them, arrived.

Ian said, “Guys, I need you to go clean up that mess. We can’t let tourists arrive and see a bunch of dead bodies and blood up there.”

“Aye, aye, Captain,” Claire said. “Keep us updated.”

Ian nodded and they filed out of the hospital.

Jade, Zac, Ian, and Sean paced the emergency room for at least an hour before the pack doctor came out.

The three men rushed the doctor.

“How is Olivia?” Zac demanded.

The doctor’s face was grim. She shook his head and said, “We’ll have to wait and see. She has broken ribs and a punctured lung. Her cheek bones have been shattered. She has several other injuries as well. It’s going to be touch and go for a while.”

Once again, fury exploded in Zac. If he could, he would go back and kill Declan all over again. Only this time, it would be a slow, torturous death.

Zac went into Olivia’s room and sat in the chair beside her bed. He held her hand and watched the slow rise and fall of her chest. Her eyes were black, and it looked like her nose had been broken. Her face was bandaged.

He hung his head and prayed that she would come out of this alive. If anything happened to her, then a part of his soul would die. She was a part of him that he couldn’t live without.

Olivia

Olivia’s eyes fluttered open and she tried to look around, but everything was hazy. Nothing looked familiar. Her heart lurched and she tried to sit up, but a familiar voice said, “Shsh. You’re okay. You’re in the hospital. Lay back down.”

Another voice yelled, “Doctor. She’s awake.”

She tried to put her hand up around her ears. Why was everyone screaming?

Her head hurt so badly, and it felt as though someone was stabbing her in the side each time she tried to take a breath.

“You’re okay,” the familiar voice said, soothingly, rubbing her arm as Olivia gasped for air.

Her eyes finally focused on her mother’s face.

“Mom?” Olivia croaked out.

“I’m here, Baby,” her mother said softly.
