Ian said, “The Capulin Volcano is the closest one.”

Everyone piled in their trucks and raced toward the volcano, navigating the twists and turns at high speeds.

Zac’s knuckles were tight on the steering wheel and his jaw was clenched. Rage flowed through him. If they had hurt Olivia, there would be hell to pay. He took the corners so fast that Ian had a death grip on the Oh Shit handle attached to the ceiling of the truck.

They got as close to the volcano as they could, screeching to a halt in the parking lot below the volcano. There were only two trucks in the lot. Both had Nebraska tags on them.

“They are here,” Zac said, through gritted teeth.

Another truck pulled in behind them, and wolf shifters poured out of it. They shifted into their wolf forms and ran up the steep side of the volcano as fast as they could.

Even those in the best of shape were slightly winded when they got close to the top. They heard several voices. Zac motioned for them to spread out the best that they could to surround Declan and his men.

Zac cautiously approached the group. Olivia was lying unconscious in a heap on the ground. She looked like nothing but a discarded pile of clothing. The tallest man in the group kicked Olivia in the head, causing her to roll over. Zac could see her bruised and bloody face.

Rage exploded inside of him. He silently vowed that none of them would survive if Olivia was dead.

He launched himself into the middle of the group. They all looked at him in surprise.

Then, the tallest one laughed and said, “You’re too late to be a hero. You may as well join the party. She’s nothing but trouble, anyway.”

“Mark, Jake, toss her in.”

“Yes, Alpha,” one of them said.

Before the two men could take a step toward Olivia, four more shifters appeared out of the brush onto the clearing. All of them were growling, showing their fangs, menacingly.

Declan laughed. “You’re too late. She’s dead.”

“Give the woman to me,” Zac ordered.

Declan laughed and said, “Not a chance. I’ve had nothing but problems since the prophecy and the little bitch escaped. She’s going to be our blood sacrifice to Mother Earth so that the curse will be lifted.”

“Do you hear yourself? You sound like a small child who believes in fairy tales. There are no such things as curses. You make your own troubles because you are an asshole.”

Declan sneered at him. “You want her? Come get her,” he said and drew back a leg.

Zac leaped into the air. Declan shifted and the two alphas fought. Declan clawed Zac in the face, managing to catch his right eye. Blood filled his eye, blinding him on that side.

Declan grazed Zac’s side with his claw, drawing blood. Ignoring it, Zac pounced and knocked Declan over. The large gray wolf hit the ground with a loud thud.

Scrambling to get back on his feet, the snarling wolf bit a chunk out of Zac’s shoulder. Zac pushed him down again, and then, without hesitation, ripped Declan’s throat out.

Shifting quickly, Zac ran over to Olivia, ignoring the blood that still leaked from his face and side. He cradled Olivia and felt for a pulse. She barely had one, and her breathing was very shallow.

The fight quickly ended. Ian had been attacked by two wolves and was clawed very badly. He had a couple of chunks of flesh ripped out of his shoulder and side.

“How is she?” Ian asked.

“Barely alive,” Zac said. “We have to get her to the doctor.”

Sean, who just had a couple of claw marks and a bite wound, hurried over. “I’m in better shape than you two are. I’ll carry her.”

The other men and women shifted, and they walked down the mountain, slowly, so as not to jar Olivia too much, leaving behind the dead and wounded shifters from Olivia’s old pack.

Zac got in the back of the truck and Sean laid Olivia on the seat, with her head resting on Zac’s lap. Ian drove like a madman to the hospital. Sean called the pack doctor as they flew down the mountain road, telling the man to meet them.

The doctor took one look at Olivia and immediately had her put into the intensive care unit. He was in the room for a long time.
