“She didn’t cause any trouble. Marsden was already kidnapping people, and she happened to take Jade, as well. As for the incident with Declan, Olivia had come to Angel’s Creek to avoid trouble. When she thought that Declan’s people had found her, she was going to pack up and leave. I convinced her to stay.”

“She hooked you as soon as she got here,” John growled.

“I pursued her. She told me no several times before I convinced her to go out with me,” Zac said.

John opened his mouth to say something, but Zac held up his hand. “She is important to me. I care about her a lot. Get used to it. We’re done here.”

Narrowing his eyes, John stared at Zac for a full minute and then got up and left.

Zac had to admit that he enjoyed the ability as an alpha to end a conversation.

The next morning, Zac dropped by the hospital to see Olivia. He was shocked when the nurse said that she had been released the evening before. He was hurt that Olivia hadn’t called him to tell him.

He drove over to her hotel room and knocked on the door. There was no answer. It was a little early for her to be at work, so he checked in with Benny.

“Have you seen Olivia?” Zac asked.

“She checked out last night,” Benny said.

“Did she say where she was going?” Zac asked.

Benny shook his head and said, “She sure didn’t. I figured since that bastard was dead, she decided to head home.”

The news made Zac’s heart lurch. Had she really left town without saying anything to him?

“How are you doing?” Zac asked.

“Fit as a fiddle, right as rain, and all those other cliché sayings there are,” Benny said, grinning. “It takes more than your average beat down from five guys to get the better of me.”

Zac laughed and said, “I guess you’re right. I wish I was half as tough as you.”

“I guess Olivia was. I heard that she took quite the beating, but she looked pretty damned good to me when she left.”

“She is tough,” Zac said. “You take care, now.”

He sat in his truck and tried calling Olivia’s number from her burner phone. He wasn’t surprised when he got a message saying that the number was no longer in service.

“Why in the hell hasn’t she contacted me?” Zac exclaimed, frustrated.

Sean said that Olivia hadn’t come back to work yet and probably wouldn’t for a week or so.

He went back to his office and asked Tami if there had been any messages from Olivia. She said no, and then went back to what she was doing.

Zac sat down heavily in his chair and wondered if he had made a huge mistake when he didn’t tell Olivia how he felt about her when he had had the chance.

Olivia was elated when the doctor said that she could go home. She tried to call Zac from the hospital phone, but it went to his voice mail. Instead of leaving a message, she called Jade.

“I’ll be there in ten minutes,” Jade promised.

She was actually there in seven.

“Can you just take me to the hotel?” Olivia said. “I think I’m ready for a shower and bed.”

“No. I’ll take you there to get your stuff, and then you’ll come back to my apartment. I have an extra room, so it’s no trouble. You’re still not very strong, and I would like the company,” Jade said. Then, before Olivia could say anything, Jade said, “Good, it’s settled.”
