Pausing the feed, I lift my hands to my face and press my palms against my eyes as I let out a groan and lean back in my chair. My phone buzzes nearby. Dropping my hands, I reach out and take the phone from the desk. Before I answer it, I glance at the time with a snort. I’ve been sitting here for over ten hours looking at shit, and I didn’t even realize it. I haven’t even had a piss break.

I slide my thumb across the screen and touch the speaker icon before I greet the person on the other end.

“Hendrick,” I say.

There is a moment of silence, then my father hums. “Come to my office. We have much to discuss.”

“I’m a little busy,” I state.

He doesn’t respond immediately. I don’t know if he’s thinking or if he’s pausing for dramatic effect. When he chuckles before he speaks, I realize it’s dramatic effect and I pinch my eyes closed because sometimes my father is so fucking over the top.

“I realize this, but you’ll want to come, and honestly, it’s not a suggestion.”

“It’s an order?” I ask.

He chuckles. “You know it is.”

Exhaling a deep breath, I stand from my chair, my body swaying for a moment before I stumble forward a few steps. “I’ll have to get an Uber,” I slur.

“Hendrick,” he grunts. “Trashed?”

Shaking my head, I stumble a few more steps before I answer him. “I was researching. Working. Fucking exhausted and drunk.”

He hums. “So you thought you could lock yourself away for a few weeks? You need to work.”

He’s right. I do need to work, but I need this more. I need her more. I start to respond to him, but he doesn’t allow it. Instead, he continues speaking.

“I understand that Allison is gone, but you cannot drown yourself in this woman. She is not your bride. She is not anything except Parker’s friend. That is all.”

“What do you know about this?” I ask, suddenly feeling extremely confused by the entire conversation. I don’t know if it’s the booze or the fact that I haven’t eaten. But his words, they perplex the absolute shit out of me.

“Dad?” I ask again.

There is a moment of silence, a long moment before he lets out a sigh. “Come to the office. I’ll send a car for you. Be ready in twenty.”

My father ends the call. I take the phone from my ear and my brows snap together as I look at the device. I’m not exactly sure what the fuck is going on, but at the same time, I need to find out. So I stumble to the bathroom, take care of business, shower, then dress. I’m not sober, but at least I can walk without stumbling now.

A few moments later, there is a call from the lobby informing me that my ride is here. I leave my condo, hurry down to the waiting car, slip into the back seat, and lean back. I don’t even have to check the front seat to know that it’s one of my cousins driving.

Mainly because I used to have this job when I first started working for the family. But I’m not in the mood to talk. I’m not in the mood for much more than sleep and a fuck. I won’t be getting the fuck anytime soon, so instead, I keep my eyes closed and eventually, the car ride lulls me to sleep.

ALLISON

Henry Hamilton would be a sexy bastard if he weren’t such a scary one. He watches me for a moment, his eyes searching my own before he grunts then leans back in the booth. His gaze never breaks from mine, and I wonder what he wants, how he found me, and what he’s going to do with me. But I don’t say a word because he intimidates the absolute hell out of me on a good day, let alone right now.

“You were kidnapped, and now you’ve run.”

His statement is correct. But I don’t say that. Instead, I give him a single nod as my response. Words won’t matter, basically because he doesn’t give a shit. He’s here because he wants something or wants me to do something.

My guess would be that he wants me to get the fuck out of town and never come back. I’m trying to do that, really, I am, but Hendrick Hamilton has a hold on me that I don’t think will ever go away.

“My son cares for you. Parker loves you and thinks of you as her family. I understand that you’re young, but I can see behind your eyes enough to know that you have been through some things in your life, even before you got kidnapped.”

Pressing my lips together, I roll them as I inhale a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I want to ask how you found me, but I am aware enough not to ask questions like that. So I won’t,” I say as he lets out a rumbling laugh. “But what do you want from me?”

“It’s simple,” he murmurs. “It would be easier if you ran. I would actually prefer it.”

I figured that’s what this was. Maybe he was going to help me get away. Because life is a lot easier without me in it, no matter who is involved. I’ve known that since I was a kid. Everything has always been better without me being part of it.
