She was mine

Until she wasn’t.

She stops at the door, turning her head to look over her shoulder at me. Her red-rimmed eyes and puffy face are all I need to know. She isn’t happy about this. She isn’t turning toward her new lover. There is something more happening here.

“I can’t help you if you don’t tell me the truth,” I rasp.

She watches me for a moment but doesn’t say anything right away. She continues to watch me, then she dips her chin in a nod. “I’ve told you the truth.”

“You’re sticking with that, then? You’re a fucking coward, Allison.”

She presses her lips together then straightens her spine, her eyes never leaving mine, and when she speaks, it’s a blow that I wasn’t expecting. She fucking cuts me, then obliterates me.

“You were a good time, Hendrick. Nothing else. I thought I could make this work with you because you had good dick and money. But it’s not going to happen. He’s better. More money, more everything, and this is his kid. I’m going to come out on top.”

“So you were using me to get money? To get a payday for life?”

She shrugs a shoulder, her expression bored as fuck. “That’s the long and short of it.”

“You’re a fucking whore.”

Allison doesn’t respond to my outburst. She doesn’t even flinch. Instead, she turns her back to me and walks out of my condo. I watch her go. Knowing she’s a lying fucking cunt. Also knowing that there’s nothing I can do to keep her with me.

As much as I want to tie her up and keep her right here in my bed, she’s telling me that this baby belongs to someone else. She’s telling me that she’s in love with this nonexistent stranger. I don’t fucking believe a word she’s said, but at the same time, if it is true, the betrayal is something I will never get over.

Looking behind me at my open office door, I know I don’t have time to research her right now. I could find out the truth, but it would take me a lot of time, and right now, I have a job that my father has demanded be done immediately.

Fucking immediately.

I turn around, walk into my office, close the door behind me, set my alarm, and then get to work. I bury myself in it, completely and totally immersing myself in my research. I’ll worry about whatever the fuck Allison is thinking later.

I’m slamming away on my keyboard when my phone rings. It dances on the desktop beside me. I want to ignore it, but I decide to answer it because I see it’s my dad. He will without a doubt punish me in some way or another if I don’t answer.

Although, I’m not wholly convinced my father doesn’t have anything to do with what happened with Allison. He was the last person with her before she came up with that story of hers. But I don’t have time to question him because I’m focused on Cousin Samson.

Sliding my fingers across the screen, I touch the speaker icon before I answer. “Dad.”

“Where are you?”

His tone is gruff, angry even, which is confusing because he knows exactly where I am. He left here just a few hours ago.

“At home, working on the assignment you gave me.”

There is a moment of silence as I wait for him to say whatever the fuck he’s got going on in his head because I’m exactly where I should be. I have nothing else going on. He told me that this was a priority.

“Get your ass to family dinner,” he demands.

I blink, then I look at the time on my computer and let out a snort. I’ve lost a whole fucking day to this shit. A whole fucking day. I didn’t even realize it. In fact, I don’t remember even getting up to take a piss, but apparently, I had no issues grabbing energy drinks from my in-office fridge because there are four empty ones on the desk around me.

“Shit, lost track of time,” I state. “Give me an hour. I’ll be there.”

He ends the call without saying a single word. It doesn’t surprise me. He said what he needed to say, he got the information he needed, and he ended the call. I think about calling Allison or at least texting her to check in but decide against it. She doesn’t want to hear from me, not right now anyway.

At least not until I’ve figured out exactly what the fuck is going on with her.

Stretching, I shake my head to try and wake myself up, then I head to the shower and clean up because if I went to family dinner looking and smelling the way I do, my mother would kick me right the fuck out.

ALLISON
