“Good. That’s settled then. Meeting adjourned.”

Parker and Roman both take the hint, pushing away from the table and muttering their goodbyes. Poppy clearly has a death wish, because she stands frozen in her spot, even as her brothers shuffle by.

“C’mon, Pops. Let’s leave these two alone, ’kay?” Parker grabs her elbow, dragging her out of the kitchen in a trance. She follows along, shooting one last withering look my way before heading out.

The screen door slams, and King exhales.

“Sorry about Poppy. She can be—a lot.”

I screw up my lips and shrug. “It’s fine. I know my family sucks.”

“It’s not fine for her to speak to you like that. And I won’t stand for it again. She got a pass today because of the shock. But that’s the last time.” He spins and faces me, his expression serious, and my chest loosens.

“Well, thanks. I appreciate that. Next time I’ll call before I stop by.”

“Next time?” King tips his head, cocking a brow high.

Heat floods my cheeks, and I’m so far out of my depth right now, I’m not certain what to say. We’ve never been in a legitimate situation, in front of people—family—before. My heart’s still hammering from the confrontation—and how King handled it.

I swallow hard before answering.

“Yeah, I’m kind of assuming there’ll be a next time, since you just declared your feelings to your entire family.”

“Come here.” King pulls me to him, hands tight on my hips as he drops his lips to mine. Applying just the right amount of pressure, telling me he’s in charge here. And I love it.

“You know I’m teasing,” he murmurs, and a ripple of desire flutters through me.

“Mmm” is all I manage to say, our tongues sliding together. The anxious tension fades away, quickly replaced with a much better kind of tension. My lower belly tingles, a familiar throbbing pulsing between my thighs as King deepens the kiss. His hands glide from my hips to my rear, his large palms squeezing, eliciting a moan from me.

“I love your ass.”

I smile, one hand finding the back pocket of his jeans and sliding in. “I love yours too. I missed it.”

“Only my ass?” He pulls away slightly, the right side of his lip quirking up.

“There might be another part of you I missed too.”

“Besides my charming personality?”

I chuckle. “Yeah, definitely besides that.”

“I’ll try not to be offended.”

“Don’t be,” I say, my fingers tiptoeing to the button of his jeans. Tracing around the metal circle, his abs flex beneath my hand. Everything about this moment feels surreal. I’ve dreamed of this reunion so many times but didn’t think it would ever happen.

Yet here we are, standing in King’s kitchen, and I almost can’t believe this is real.

“Juliet . . .”

King’s deep voice startles me out of my thoughts.

“You okay?” He runs his thumb along my jawline, tipping my face up to meet his gaze. I nod.

“Yes. It’s just—” My voice wavers, breath hitching. I take a quick, shuddery inhale. “I’ve thought about being here, like this, with you?—”

“So have I.”

“You have?”
