Heat flames my cheeks, and a startled giggle bubbles up inside me, spilling from my lips.

“Yes, King, I’ll be your girlfriend.”

He raises my hand to his mouth, grazing my knuckles with his lips.

“Well, that’s settled then.”

I shuffle my feet, uncertainty still nagging at me, pinching low in my gut.

“But ...” King gazes at me over our intertwined hands.

“Where are you going? How long will you be gone?”

Can I come with you? hangs on the tip of my tongue, but I somehow manage to bite the words back, holding them inside.

He huffs out a quick breath, licks at his lower lip. His thinking face.

“Normally I wouldn’t speak of this outside the family. But since we’re official as of one minute ago, I suppose I can tell you. Swear you won’t breathe a word of it to anyone.”

I mark an X across my chest with my free hand.

“Swear on all things holy.”

“I’m making a trip up to Peachtree Grove, Georgia. Turns out we may have some kin up there we never knew about.”

“Really?” Shock rattles around deep inside me, but I try to stay cool.

There might be more Montgomerys?

“Maybe. I need to head up there and see for myself.”

“Oh. Okay.”

“Okay? Or Oh-kay?” He teases me, tracing my jawline with his thumb.

“Okay. I mean, I’ll miss you a ton.”

He presses his lips together, his nose scrunching up a teensy bit. A horse neighs from the stall behind him, the thick, dark tail swishing through the air. Swish-swish, swish-swish.

“Come with me.”

“What?” Shock tips my voice up an octave, and my chest is light and fizzy. “You want me to go on a road trip with you?”

“Sure, why not? Seeing as how we’re boyfriend and girlfriend now.” His eyes glitter with amusement at the phrase, which sounded funny rolling off his tongue. “Think you can get someone to cover your shifts at the Tipsy Taco? We’ll probably be gone a few days.”

I rack my brain, trying to calculate who owes me a favor at the restaurant.

“I think I can get them covered, yeah.”

“It’s settled then. Can you leave tomorrow?”

Slipping my cell from my pocket, I tap on my calendar. Empty of all engagements, save for work.

“Yes.”

“Let’s do it then.”

King grips me by my hips and pulls me to him, his mouth smashing against mine, and I feel like I’m floating on air.
