“I’m sure Candy would appreciate it.”

Sabby leans closer to me, her bargain-drugstore perfume potent, making my eyes water.

“Listen—your brother was in here last night, after you left. He was asking around. Lots of questions about where you were.”

A yawning pit opens in my stomach, dread flooding through me.

“Which brother?”

“Cash.”

“What’d you say?”

“Nothing, babe. You know I’ve got your back. Besides—I wasn’t positive about where you went anyway. And my mama always taught me not to spread rumors.”

She stares at me with kohl-rimmed eyes, waiting for me to spill the deets. I toss my options around quickly, straightening the bottles behind the bar as a distraction.

“It’s best you don’t know the details, Sab. Safer that way. Do me a favor, though, will ya?”

“Geez, another one? You’re really racking up a tab today.”

I shoot her a half-hearted smile. “If either of those bozos come in here asking after me, tell them I have a highly contagious stomach bug, and you’re covering my shift for me.”

“Got it. Toxic vomit spewing from nostrils. She’s home tucked up in bed, quarantined.”

“Perfect.”

Sabby’s lips slide into a knowing grin. “Who’s the guy?”

“You don’t know him.”

“Literally no chance of that, unless he’s an out-of-towner. And you don’t seem like the type to drop your panties for a tourist.”

My cheeks flame at her crassness—and her spot-on assessment. Sabby’s smarter than she lets on.

“Better if you don’t know. Trust me. My brothers are sniffing around. The less you know, the better.”

“Fine. But I’ll be expecting some X-rated details when you get back. Least you can do for all my troubles.”

I giggle in spite of myself. “Names and places will be changed to protect the innocent. But we’ll have a girls’ night when I get back from ‘quarantine.’” I put the last word in air quotes. “Promise.”

The first lunch customer sidles up to the bar, slamming his hand down to get our attention and breaking up our little chat. Sabby scurries over to take his drink order, and I hustle to the back to grab my apron and get ready for my shift. Staying busy will keep my mind off my brothers until I can be with King again. I’m already counting down the minutes.

KING

I don’t know what the hell I’m thinking, inviting Juliet on a road trip with me. To potentially meet my half sister no less.

Like why in the actual fuck did I do that?

Because you don’t want to spend another second without her, that’s why.

Her soft, supple body next to yours, sharing the same air, the same space. And maybe, just maybe, having someone to lean on when things get tough.

The realization hits me like a sucker punch to the gut.

I’m King Montgomery.
