I don’t need people. They need me. That’s how things have always worked, how we operate.

Needing people is a sign of weakness. And no way in hell am I weak.

Maybe I should call her and cancel. Tell her to stay home and I’ll see her in a few days.

Those wide eyes flash before me, filled with so much sadness that my heart aches for her.

No. No way am I canceling.

Buzz, buzz.

Little Sis: Heard you’re going to Peachtree Grove tmrw

Damn. How’d she already hear that?

King: Word travels quick around here

Little Sis: It does. You going alone?

I lick along my lower lip, consider the best way to answer.

Poppy said she was tired of the lies. The only other option is the truth.

King: Juliet’s going with me

I hurry and hit send before I can change my mind.

Little Sis: You’re kidding me

King: You said you wanted the truth. There it is

Little Sis: Wow

Because she’s Poppy, she doesn’t ask after specifics like Parker would. Maybe even Rome, although he uses a little more tact. But I know she won’t just drop it. That’d be too easy.

Little Sis: Do you even know this girl? Now you’re going on a road trip with her?

Well, shit.

I’m not diving into history via text. No one has that kinda time.

King: Enough

Nice vague answer.

Little Sis: I think you should go slow. You don’t know if you can trust her

Oh, the irony. Juliet’s not sure she can trust me, yet Poppy believes it’s the other way around.

King: She’s not like her brothers, Pops

King: She’s a good person

Little Sis: How do you know? Because she helped with the trial stuff?

King: Yes

I leave it at that, hopeful it’s a juicy enough bone for her.
