Laying back, I tucked my hands behind my head, gazing up at the night sky. Nyx laid down beside me and watched the stars in silence for a while.

“Explain to me why you are so set on returning?” he said after some time.

“I would have thought Kol had told you my reasons.”

He raised up onto his elbow and looked down. “Kol is your friend, and I’m not going to take that away from you by using him as a spy.”

A smile curled my lips.

“What?” he asked.

“He said the same thing.”

He laid back down. “Well, there you are, then.”

Silence stretched, once again, and I felt his expectant stare boring into me.

“I think I just need it, that’s all.” I didn’t have the energy to go into my reasons tonight.

Before he could reply, a giant mass slammed down next to me, causing me to sit up suddenly and pitch forward.

A hand snatched out, saving me from falling.

“Don’t fall to your death on my account,” Kol said flatly.

“Kol! You nearly scared me to death. Never mind the fall.”

“Kol?” Nyx said, concern lacing his voice. “What’s wrong?”

I looked at Kol, then. Nyx was right, something was wrong.

Kol looked distracted, agitated. “I have to pack. I have to?—”

“Pack?” I asked.

Kol raised his eyes to Nyx, and sadness pooled in them. “We’ve been ordered to the Second Kingdom, brother.

“No.” Nyx’s hand went to his mouth. “They can’t do this.”

“It’s done. We just got called back from patrol, and I have to get ready. We fly out at first light.”

“Who changed the orders? I speak to the King and the Regent daily, and—” Nyx cut himself off as he laid eyes on his brother.

“I don’t know.”

“We’ve had meetings for weeks about how to retake the outpost and make sure another flight isn’t lost. How did this happen?”

“The King came into the war room this morning asking questions. He said something about my powers being undervalued.” Kol put his hands over his face. “I didn’t think it would lead to this. I don’t know what the fuck they think I can do. I’m not a fucking replacement for you.”

“No one expects you to be.” Nyx put a hand on Kol’s arm.

My stomach dropped. Was this because of my slip in the library? Did they know about the twin’s bond?

“It looks like they think I can be.” Kol didn’t turn around as he spoke.

I sat rooted in place, unable to move, not knowing if I should say I thought it was my fault.

Nyx wrapped an arm around his brother, and Kol leaned into him. I almost felt like I shouldn’t be watching this private moment between them.
