“Normal?” I finally said.

She paused. “Yes. Normal is a good thing.”

“There’s a human inside of me. That’s not normal.”

Laughter cruised from her lips. “Actually, that’s very normal for a healthy, young, sexually active woman like yourself. Congratulations.”

She was right, and I somehow missed how all that fucking could land me in this situation.

I was pregnant. By Dominic Lucas—my professor. Holy…

“Everything will be fine. If the father is not in your life, it won’t hinder your life. There are plenty of options available to you.”

“What kind of options?”

“Well, there’s abortion, adoption services, or if you decide not to go those routes, government services will help with needs that might arise.”

I sucked in a heavy breath. “This is making me nauseous.”

She nodded. “That’s probably the little one, but I can prescribe you nausea medicine to take care of that.”

“I can’t get an abortion.” I shook my head. “That’s not something I can handle.”

She nodded. “And that’s okay. There are?—”

“Yes, I know, other options.”

She nodded and smiled. “I’ll get your prescriptions ready. Give me a moment, and the nurse will be in with your papers.”

Dr. Walker left the room, and I sat there, stunned.

Dominic had disappeared from my life, and I wasn’t in the mood to track him down. He knew how to find me when he wanted to, but what did that mean?

Last week at the club, he’d slipped up to me on the dance floor and held me tight. That single embrace told me something.

While he never opened his mouth to speak…Dominic had missed me. So why the sudden disappearing act? I didn’t want to play games with him, even though I missed him terribly. But the least he could do was let me know why.

I leaned back on the table and stared at the ceiling. Then there was the matter of my grandfather. I closed my eyes and inhaled. After this appointment, I had to see him for what he declared was an important meeting.

Imagine that. The only conversation I’d ever had with him was when something was of great importance, according to him, and needed to be addressed immediately.

And just like my parents, I was there whenever he needed me.

Why?

What would happen if I did what Penelope wanted to do? Wholly?

Would that be so bad?

I grumbled and rolled my eyes. With the money I had—money that my parents left in a trust fund—I could leave the country and get as far away from here as possible. I could live my life like a nomad. I’d watched women do it and record their lives online. I could do it, too.

The only thing that stopped me was knowing my grandfather could find me, and when he did, he might be crazy enough to kill me off for disobeying him.

I became hot suddenly. This was the life I was born into. The life that my friend Sofia said she wanted that she had no idea about. She thought the grass was greener on my side—and she was terribly wrong.

So, what did I want?

Dominic.
