“If you need a counselor, I’m available.”

Hearing Ms. Monroe’s voice, I turned. She was always dressed with a sexy edge; tight knee-length pinstripe skirts seemed to be her go-to. And it appeared she had them in every color. Her silk shirts always outlined her breasts and laid carefully on her curvy hips and flat belly.

More and more, she began to pop out around Dominic. I wondered if they’d had sex, and the thought made me nauseous.

“No, Ms. Monroe. I wanted to see Professor Lucas about something we’d previously discussed. I’ll try another time.”

“He’s an advisor, not a professor, and I’m not sure how long he’ll be out. He took family medical leave.”

I frowned. “How do you know that?”

She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. She smiled. “It was just something I heard.”

“Hmmm. Well, he does teach from time to time, so I call him professor. And thanks for the info about his family leave. I hope everything’s okay.”

“We keep in touch often, so I’ll let him know you stopped by.”

Her smirk was smugger than a smile, and I had to wonder if she was willingly offering that information because she was trying to intimidate me.

“Oh, do you have his number? I’d love to…you know what, never mind. I should probably get it from Professor Broward—he wouldn’t mind since we were working on something closely.”

I watched her smile fall and almost laughed out loud. “Have a good day, Ms. Monroe.”

When I left, I added an extra twist to my step, showing confidence like she’d done the last time we were both in Dominic’s presence. But as soon as I cut the corner, bile rose in my throat, and I rushed to the nearest open door and grabbed a trash can.

“Uh!”

Dropping to my knees, I vomited, heaved, then vomited again. Weakness hit me instantly, and I fell to the side, sitting on my hip.

“What the hell?”

I blinked around the empty office, spit the last remnants into the garbage can, and then gathered myself, sweeping my hair across my shoulders to my back.

“Woooo,” I blew out a breath, steadied, then rose and went straight to the nurse’s office.

Two weeks later

“You’re pregnant.”

My mouth dropped as I gawked at my OB-GYN. “That’s not possible. Can you check again?”

“Have you had sex in the last sixty days?”

I opened my mouth to respond, but nothing came out.

Dr. Walker leaned closer and studied my eyes. “Ms. Cattaneo?”

I blinked. “Yes. I mean, yes.”

She nodded. “You appear shocked. I take it this isn’t good news?”

Again, my mouth opened, but I couldn’t form a coherent sentence.

“Take a minute to take it in. While you’re doing that, your lab results came back great. You have no ailments. Your bloodwork is fine. Blood pressure is great, pap smear is normal.”
