Smoke floated from my tires, and the bike leaned so low to the ground I could’ve torn the flesh off my knee had it scraped the asphalt. Two gunshots came at the same time I leaned, and both flew past me.

I hit a hard left, lifted the gun, and let off three shots at the driver while simultaneously catching a glimpse of the man aiming from the sunroof.

Penelope’s father.

I cursed as the car flew off the road into a wooded area and smacked into a light pole. Sparks flew from the beam, and I slowed my bike, circled back, and approached the wrecked vehicle with my gun drawn.

Spitting up blood, the father dragged himself and his wife—Penelope’s mother—out of the split car. I rode closer once they were out and kicked the father in his face while still seated on my bike. He dropped his wife, and she moaned in pain.

Clutching a fistful of his shirt, I revved my engine and dragged him across the street to my warehouse.

Blood dripped from his mouth as he braced on his knees in front of me.

“You won’t make it out of this alive, motherfucker,” his raspy voice spat.

“Neither will you.”

I strolled to my boiler and turned it on. Flames rose inside, and I positioned the plank outward so I could put the father's body on top of it.

“Smug motherfuckers like you always think they have the upper hand. But you fucked up by killing my brother. And you will see your life flash before your eyes before the night ends.”

I looked around. “You’re suffering from a concussion. But don’t worry. I’m putting you out of your misery in a second.”

The father laughed. “Everyone underestimates her. Everyone!”

A shadow entered the warehouse, and the intruder and I lifted our guns simultaneously.

Pow!

“Aaaaaaah!” Penelope’s mother screamed and gripped her wrist as blood splattered from the hole in her hand.

Lunging upward, her father staggered toward me.

Pow! Pow!

I shot both his thighs, and he dropped to his knees in front of me, howling in pain.

I was lifting the gun to his head when Penelope came through the door.

“No!”

I sighed and wondered if she’d followed me again, like she did at the billiard club. But that didn’t make sense because I was honest with her now. What reason would she have to be sneaky…unless she was hiding something again?

The thought made me so angry that I wanted to show Penelope what would happen if she betrayed me.

“Dominic. Please!”

I grabbed a second gun and lifted the gun to my temple while holding the other on her father. I turned to her. “Choose.”

Shocked, her eyes widened. “What?” she yelled. “No! No! I can’t do that.”

“Choose, goddess.”

Tears sprang from her eyes. “Please, Dominic, don’t.”

“If you don’t choose, I’ll do it for you. You have ten seconds.”

“You are not each other's enemies!”
