Smack!

I closed my eyes, locked my jaw, and suppressed my reflexes. A snarl moved through me. “You won’t get a chance to do that again.”

She lifted her other hand, and I caught her wrist mid-air. My monster moved through me, and I felt the shift. My eyes blackened, and I spoke one word.

“Don’t.”

My voice changed, and she and her parents noticed it, too, because their eyes widened as she took a step back.

“You’ve made your choice. Now I’ve made mine.”

I turned, and she screamed, “Dominic!”

But I left her shouting at my back as I quickly disappeared outside. Once out of the tunnel, I rushed to another bike I had stationed in the garage.

Igniting the engine, I drove to the top and left the warehouse. Picking up my cell, I called Mano.

“I still cannot reach her,” he answered.

“Take this address.” I rattled off the address to my second location. “There will be a police presence in the area. Make sure to stick with her!”

“We will.”

I hung up and dialed Dameon. He answered in Italian on the first ring.

“Son. Are you back?”

“Father, we need to meet now.” I gave him my coordinates.

“I’m headed to the billiard club. You’re not far from me. Let’s meet there.”

“I’ll be there in six minutes.”

I ended the call and drove towards the billiard club. Traffic was heavy and because of it, he would likely get stuck in traffic.

My thoughts slipped between what needed to be done and Penelope.

In the deepest part of my heart, where our love lay, I always knew we could never be. It’s the main reason I’d initially fought so hard to keep her away from me. Love could not survive in the dark corridors of my soul. It had been spoken to me by Dameon years ago, and it still rang true…no matter how bad I wanted it to be a lie.

The wind ran past my face as I neared the intersection of Burlesque Boulevard. I slowed when a shift in the atmosphere made me more aware of my surroundings.

Dameon’s motorcade crossed the street, and I turned my bike in his direction to ride next to him when an explosion flipped the middle car and ignited the night.

I slammed the brakes, turned the wheel, and hit the ground. My bike flew away from underneath me and rammed into an oncoming vehicle.

Pain rocked me as my body tumbled and rolled to a stop. The flare from the explosion’s fire was so close I could feel the heat simmering from the flames, but my vision was blurry, and pain was slamming through my head from my wreck.

I tried and failed to shake off the blur, going in and out of consciousness. I knew if I didn’t shake out of it, I would most likely wake up in the hands of my enemies, and then maybe Penelope’s father would’ve been right. I wouldn’t live through the night. With all the strength I could muster, I fought to stay awake when a set of hands grabbed me.

I fought the blurry enemy, swinging and reaching for the blade I kept on my side.

“It’s…”

I swung and fell, rushed to my feet, and turned to swing again when the voice broke through the ringing in my ears.

“It’s Bruno!”

Hearing his voice, I grabbed his shirt and shook him. “Bruno?!”
