“Slow down,” Dr. Peterson said.

“Get your fuckin’ hands off me!”

“We’re not your enemy, Mr. Lucas. We’re here to help.”

“Where is my father?”

“Mr. Lucas…”

“Where is he!?”

The door burst open, and Luna entered the room with Bruno behind her. They rushed to my side, and Luna touched my shoulder.

“I need you at your best, brother. Calm down, please.”

I reined in my deep breaths, and Bruno spoke. “Do you remember what happened?”

“Where is my father?” My voice was a harsh snarl.

Luna and Bruno glanced between each other, then back to me.

“We will take you to him,” Bruno said. “But first, do you remember what happened?”

I stared at him, my chest rising and falling as I struggled to maintain control of my breathing. “There was…an explosion.”

Bruno nodded. “You were thrown from your bike. It’s a miracle that you’re alive.”

I tossed the sheets off me, and everyone grabbed at me when I stood.

“Release me.”

“Take it easy, brother.”

I glared at Luna. “I’m fine.”

“And yet you’ve been in a coma for a week.”

Surprised, I glanced at everyone in the room. “A week!”

Luna nodded. “Yes.”

“Take me to my father now.”

In the morgue, I stared down at the pale corpse of Dameon. He appeared like a cold statue, lying on his back with his eyes closed. A multitude of emotions ran through me: shock, pain, regret, sorrow, guilt, but most prevalent—anger.

“We think it was the Black Rose,” Bruno said.

Luna added. “It would make sense that it was only a matter of time before the Black Rose struck closer to home, but I never expected him to get Father.”

“He almost got you, too,” Bruno added.

“The only difference is he didn’t leave the rose behind,” Luna said.

“He could’ve run out of time, who knows,” Bruno added.

They were talking between each other when I whispered:
