“Arms up.”
She yawns, putting them in the air, and I slide the T-shirt over her head.
“Feet in,” Whit says, and within seconds, she’s all zipped up.
I stand and pull back her comforter, then grab her up and set her in the middle. “You do prayers?”
She yawns again as she nods, and then Whit yawns—and, yep, they’re contagious ’cause I’m doing it now too.
I pop a kiss on the top of Nora’s head. “I’ll leave you ladies to it. See you at church in the morning.”
“Kiss Mommy’s head too.”
“Nora, it’s—” Whit stops mid-sentence when I do just that, and Nora starts giggling.
Downstairs, Pastor B and Mrs. B are sitting at the table.
“We had a great day today. Thank you for inviting us.” He smiles.
I shove my hands in my pockets, and I have no idea why, but I’m feeling anxious as hell right now. “Thank you both for coming.”
“She’s got you twisted up, doesn’t she?” Pastor B chuckles.
Being as honest as I can, I ask, “Which one?”
“Son, Whit’s had you twisted up since you walked into our church the very first time.” He smiles. “And now, Nora has you by the heartstrings too.”
“Won’t deny either one of those things.”
“What are you going to do about it?” he asks, eyes locked with mine.
“Arthur Belington,” Mrs. B tsks. “You need to stop meddling.”
“Will I have your blessing when I figure out how to untangle it all?”
Mrs. B giggles. “Well, now.”
“Would you wait until she’s ready?” Pastor B asks, eyes narrowed a bit, lips in a straight line.
“I’d try my best.”
His face breaks into a smile. “You have our blessing.”
“You sure do,” Mrs. B says.
“You two mind if Whit and I head over to the women’s shelter to look into something?”
“Got anything to do with Chloe Shaw?” Pastor B asks.
“It does.”
I hear Whit coming down the stairs, and Pastor B says, “Heard talk about a couple of games in Vegas next week.”
“Love to have all four of you there. You could fly in with?—”
“Our weekends are the Lord’s, but I’m bettin’ Whit, Gwen, and Chloe would love to see you play.”
“Popa B,” Whit gasps, shaking her head.
