“Don’t shake your head at me, young lady. You haven’t been away from Walton since you became a mom. Gram and I are gonna take a few of the kids to that new water park near Fort Worth. She won’t miss you one bit.”

“Work,” Whit says.

“You work one weekend a month. You have next weekend off. Use a personal day for Thursday.”

“Well, I don’t know if York and?—”

“Whit, come on. You’ll have fun. So will Nora.” She narrows her eyes at me, and I hold my hands up. “It’ll be a girls’ trip.”

Walking out of the house, I can’t help but laugh. “How’s the air up there?”

“What?” she snips.

“You’ve done that since I’ve known you. You get pissed, and you stick your nose up in the air. Not gonna lie, I worry that if you do when it rains, you might drown, Whit.”

“You’re not funny.” She starts toward her vehicle, and I move around her, scoop her up, and throw her over my shoulder.

“You big jerk, put me down before I kick you in the junk,” she growls.

“No way we’re driving separately.”

Her fingers knot in the back of my hair. “No kidding, but the residents know my car, and it won’t freak them out if they happen to see it.”

“My bad.” I make a U-turn and head toward her vehicle.

“Last warning, in three, two?—”

“Fine,” I concede as I put her on her feet. “You changed your clothes.”

“I smelled like camp.”

“You smell like bluebonnets right before they fully blossom—always have.”

She turns back and scowls. “Can we focus on the task at hand?”

“Sure can, Whit.” I open the passenger door and wave my hand in front of me. “But only if you let me drive.”

It’s silent as I drive until Whit finally breaks it “Did you know Leland Locke and York had a thing?”

“When?”

“In school.”

“No, I must have missed that.”

“You worshipped him.” She sits back. “How did you not know this?”

“Don’t get it twisted. I didn’t worship him; I admired his talent. Learned what I could from him. I didn’t tell you because I truly didn’t know.”

“Danny and Marks never mentioned it?”

“Not to me.”

Silence again. This time, it’s me who breaks it. “Fish or baseball?”

She smiles. “She just couldn’t pick.”

“Says it was her first time getting her nails done.”
