“Let me come, I’ll show you his construction site.”

“You working up there?” he asked.

“I was. They fired me.”

“Oh, no,” Marigold said. “Why?”

“Because of you.”

Her eyes widened. “What? No. I’m so sorry.”

I grinned. “Don’t be. I was going to quit anyway.”

“I’m sure I can find it,” Garrett said.

He asked Marigold a few more questions about Preston’s car, the helicopter at the airport, and his hotel. Then he made sure he had her number and said he’d be in touch. We both stood and walked him to the door. She thanked him for coming and he gave her a friendly hug before he left.

She shut the door behind him and locked the deadbolt. “This is all so surreal.”

“Don’t worry. Garrett will take care of it.”

She nodded, then met my eyes. “Can I ask you a question?”

“Sure.”

“How did you get here so fast?”

“I crashed at Annika and Levi’s last night.”

“Why?”

I shrugged. “I wanted to be close in case you needed me.”

She stared at me for a long moment, and I thought she might cry again. Without another word, she marched over, grabbed me by the back of the neck, and pulled my mouth to hers.

My entire body exploded with sensation. Groaning, I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her tight against me. Her lips were soft but hungry and I parted them with my tongue so I could delve into her mouth.

I had no idea if she’d planned on kissing me like this, but now that we’d started, I couldn’t stop.

Her arms wound around my shoulders and her body pressed against me as I took the kiss deeper. I tasted her, savored her. Kissed her for every time I’d wanted to, but couldn’t, wishing I could make up for all the years I’d been an idiot and pretended to ignore her.

A part of me wanted to start pulling her clothes off, but I had just enough blood in my brain to know better. I ached for her, but with what she’d been through, now wasn’t the time.

And I was just really fucking happy she was kissing me.

This was only the beginning. Now she was mine.

CHAPTER 25

Marigold

I lost myself in Zachary’s kiss.

He’d been the subject of countless daydreams since my teens, but kissing him was better than I could have imagined. I’d thought he hated me, but the truth was, tension had been building between us for years. And in that moment, it exploded.

My body pressed against his while he devoured me. I was helpless. The sting in my cheek was forgotten, eclipsed by Zachary’s brain-melting kiss.

Eventually, he pulled back and our lips parted. He held me close, his nose brushing mine.
